This is not the part of the desktop issue. (i guess because the desktop is using the API to open an image)
However, almost all custom node with image. When choosing the "Open image", the ComfyUI Desktop will block the event
I studying the code, some of the extension is using
window.open()to open a image.Obviously, this not work on the desktop version.
The main issue is, desktop version block any external link to open in new windows

The desktop app uses Electron, which intercepts window.open() calls and external links in its main process. By default, only URLs starting with specific prefixes are allowed to open in popups; all others—including blob: and image URLs—are forced to open externally via shell.openExternal, which doesn't work for blob URLs or local images and causes the issue you described. This logic is controlled by the setWindowOpenHandler and #shouldOpenInPopup methods in the appWindow.ts file.
To work around this, extension developers can consider saving images to disk and providing a download link, or request changes to the desktop app to allow image or blob URLs in #shouldOpenInPopup. Modifying this handler to recognize image URLs or blob: URLs could resolve the issue, but would need careful consideration for security. For now, opening images in a new tab via window.open() is blocked by design in the desktop version. More details are available in the code and related discussions here and here.

So currently there is no solution for any custom node to use any external
also extension developer cannot use / override the method #shouldOpenInPopup in the appWindow.ts ?
@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Oct 7, 2025):
That's correct—right now, there is no supported way for custom nodes or extensions to open external links or images in the ComfyUI Desktop app, and extension developers cannot override or hook into the #shouldOpenInPopup method in appWindow.ts. This logic is private and only modifiable in the main Electron process code, not from extension or userland code. Any change to this behavior would require editing the desktop app's source directly, as there are no extension points or IPC hooks for this functionality at the moment. Reference

When you open an image like that, it uses "shell open". It simply opens the file however your operating system normally opens those files (the same as when you double-click that type of file, for example).
The MS store popup you're seeing should show up any time you open the same kind of file (png?).
@thc282 commented on GitHub (Oct 8, 2025):
i know is window function but it cant set where to open
and there is no option in the "default app" also
ComfyUI is not part of the App in system, so not in the list
