App Version

ComfyUI_desktop v0.5.8

Expected Behavior

ComfyUI should not think that it is running a node which it has already ran after it has completed a run.
ComfyUI should be able to run a workflow if it is not already running.

Actual Behavior

After updating to this version, ComfyUI's progress bar and workflow run now get permanently stuck on a single node, but does not have a problem with inference. It can finish the generation (progress bar and everything runs as normal), then it does what I just stated after completion (or run failure or cancellation) even on nodes at the very beginning of a workflow, making it impossible to run again unless I restart the application.
Refreshing ComfyUI (Ctrl+R) results in the progress bar saying "Running in other tab" even though there is no other tab and nothing is running.

Steps to Reproduce

"Failed to upload "workflow.png""

Please let me know how I can share a PNG.
I just made a simple workflow and this issue happened with the 'Preview Image' node.

Workflow:
Load Checkpoint -> CLIP Text Encode (x2) -> (Empty Latent Image) -> KSampler -> VAE Decode -> Preview Image.

Debug Logs

The UI stuck issue you’re seeing is likely caused by a backend Python error (TypeError: new_task_done() got an unexpected keyword argument 'process_item'), which leaves the workflow in a broken state and blocks further runs until you restart. This kind of error is often triggered by incompatibilities with custom nodes, corrupted settings, or dependency problems after an update. Disabling all custom nodes from the settings menu (or starting with --disable-all-custom-nodes), resetting the virtual environment (by deleting the .venv folder), clearing app settings, or doing a clean reinstall have helped others resolve similar issues. If you have a workflow that always loads on startup, try removing or renaming it outside the app to see if the UI recovers. Also, check your logs for errors about node imports or dependencies if the UI fails to recover [source][source].

In v0.5.8, the restart button only restarts the backend server and does not refresh the UI, so you’ll need to manually refresh (Ctrl+R) or restart the app after plugin or node changes [source].

To share a PNG workflow image in a GitHub issue, simply drag and drop the file into the comment box or use the “Attach files” button. You can also embed it in markdown like this: ![description](url) [source].

Thanks for sharing the workflow and screenshot. Since a clean reinstall didn’t resolve the issue and your workflow uses only standard nodes, this persistent UI freeze is almost always caused by a backend Python error, custom node incompatibility, or a corrupted environment—not the desktop app itself. The TypeError you saw (new_task_done() got an unexpected keyword argument 'process_item') points to a backend or custom node mismatch after an update, which leaves the UI stuck until a full restart [source].

Here’s what to try next:

  • Disable all custom nodes/extensions from the settings or start with --disable-all-custom-nodes to see if the issue goes away.
  • Delete the .venv folder in your ComfyUI directory to reset the Python environment, then let the app recreate it on next launch.
  • Clear or reset user config files (like comfy.settings.json) in your user data directory.
  • Run your workflow in this clean environment (no custom nodes, default settings) to check if it’s reproducible.
  • Check main.log and comfyui.log in your logs folder for errors about node imports or dependencies.

If the problem persists even after all of this, try running the workflow on a different machine or environment to rule out system-specific issues. If you want, you can share relevant log output here and I can help interpret it [source].

The TypeError you saw (new_task_done() got an unexpected keyword argument 'process_item') points to a backend or custom node mismatch after an update, which leaves the UI stuck until a full restart [source].

Here’s what to try next:

* Disable all custom nodes/extensions from the settings or start with `--disable-all-custom-nodes` to see if the issue goes away.

* Delete the `.venv` folder in your ComfyUI directory to reset the Python environment, then let the app recreate it on next launch.

* Clear or reset user config files (like `comfy.settings.json`) in your user data directory.

* Run your workflow in this clean environment (no custom nodes, default settings) to check if it’s reproducible.

* Check `main.log` and `comfyui.log` in your logs folder for errors about node imports or dependencies.

If the problem persists even after all of this, try running the workflow on a different machine or environment to rule out system-specific issues. If you want, you can share relevant log output here and I can help interpret it [source].

None of that works. How do I roll back the ComfyUI Desktop version? This version is broken for me.

To roll back ComfyUI Desktop to a previous stable version, uninstall your current version and manually install the older release. There’s no built-in rollback feature—this is the official process recommended if troubleshooting hasn’t worked source.

For Windows:

  1. Uninstall ComfyUI Desktop via Windows Settings.
  2. To fully remove all files, manually delete these folders:
    • C:\Users\<YOUR_USERNAME>\AppData\Local\@comfyorgcomfyui-electron-updater
    • C:\Users\<YOUR_USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Programs\@comfyorgcomfyui-electron
    • C:\Users\<YOUR_USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\ComfyUI
(This does not delete your models, custom nodes, or input/output folders—delete those manually if needed.)
  3. Download the installer for your desired previous version from the ComfyUI Desktop GitHub Releases and install it source.

For macOS:

  1. Delete the ComfyUI app from your Applications folder.
  2. To fully remove all files, delete ~/Library/Application Support/ComfyUI.
  3. Download and install the previous version from the GitHub Releases page source.

When reinstalling, you can migrate user files and custom nodes, but model files are only linked, not copied. If you want a truly clean slate, manually clear out any leftover user/config files before reinstalling. The documentation also recommends checking dependencies and custom node compatibility before and after rollback, as these are common sources of errors after updates source.

ComfyUI Desktop is still in Beta, so installation and rollback processes may change in future versions.
