App Version
Environment
OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
ComfyUI Desktop version: v0.6.2
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 (drivers installed and working)
System Python: 3.11.9 (from python.org, correctly configured in PATH)
VC++ Redistributable: Installed
Git: Installed
Note: System Python version does not matter, as ComfyUI Desktop uses uv-managed Python internally.
Expected Behavior
ComfyUI Desktop should successfully create a virtual environment and start the server
Maintenance page “Status: OK” should reflect actual runtime health
Actual Behavior
Installation fails with OpenSSL error
Desktop UI shows green checkmarks but backend does not function correctly
OPENSSL_Uplink(...): no OPENSSL_Applink
followed by:
Failed to upgrade pip: exit code 1
Fatal error creating virtual environment
relevent Log excerts :
Creating virtual environment at C:\Users...\ComfyUI.venv with python 3.12
Running uv command: uv venv --python 3.12 --python-preference only-managed
Using CPython 3.12.11 (uv managed)
OPENSSL_Uplink(...): no OPENSSL_Applink
Error creating virtual environment: Failed to upgrade pip
The error oginiates from :
C:\Users...\AppData\Roaming\uv\python\cpython-3.12.11-windows-x86_64-none
Steps to Reproduce
Install ComfyUI Desktop on Windows
Launch the app
Desktop begins installation process
uv downloads and uses its embedded CPython 3.12.11
During venv creation or ensurepip / pip bootstrap, installation fails
This happens consistently, even after:
Reinstalling ComfyUI Desktop
Clearing uv cache
Resetting virtual environment
Rebooting
Reinstalling Python (3.11 / 3.12)
Disabling Microsoft Store Python aliases

Other
On Windows, ComfyUI Desktop fails during installation or startup with an OpenSSL applink error, even though the Maintenance page reports Status: OK. The failure occurs while creating or initializing the virtual environment using uv-managed Python 3.12, and cannot be resolved by reinstalling system Python, resetting the venv, or clearing cache.
This appears to be a runtime incompatibility between uv’s embedded Python 3.12, OpenSSL, and Windows, not a user configuration issue.

Hi @SuryaPratap1008! I'm Dosu and I’m helping the desktop team.
This OpenSSL error isn't documented or specifically handled in ComfyUI Desktop, and it's not caused by your system configuration. It's a low-level incompatibility between uv's embedded Python 3.12, OpenSSL, and Windows. The app treats this as a generic failure during virtual environment creation or pip upgrade—there's no targeted detection or workaround in the codebase, and common fixes like reinstalling, clearing cache, or changing mirrors don't resolve it. As of now, there's no known solution or tracked bug for this issue. Monitoring for updates to uv, the embedded Python build, or ComfyUI Desktop itself is the best path forward for a fix.

I don't think this has been appropriately resolved. It just happened to me as well. Whether it is part of a system incompatibility or a flaw in the application, this shouldn't have been closed. I realize the irony of saying that an AI shouldn't have been allowed to close this when the application is one of the most prototypical examples of how AI is infiltrating our modern-day lives, but still, c'mon. This is an actual bug that deserves human attention.
