Description

On macOS, the .venv directory created by ComfyUI Desktop is protected by App Management sandboxing. External processes (Terminal, iTerm2, etc.) cannot read or modify files in the venv, making it impossible to manually fix dependency issues.

$ python /Users/.../ComfyUI/.venv/bin/python -c "import sqlalchemy"
PermissionError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted: '/Users/.../ComfyUI/.venv/pyvenv.cfg'

$ cat /Users/.../ComfyUI/.venv/pyvenv.cfg
cat: Operation not permitted

$ xattr /Users/.../ComfyUI/.venv/pyvenv.cfg
xattr: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted

Even ls on the venv directory returns "Operation not permitted".

Impact

When the desktop app fails to update dependencies correctly (see #1665), users cannot manually run pip install -r requirements.txt to fix the issue, because Terminal has no access to the venv.

Expected Behavior

Either:

  1. The desktop app should document the required macOS permissions (App Management / Full Disk Access for Terminal), OR
  2. The app should provide a built-in way to repair/reinstall dependencies without requiring Terminal access (the "Reset Environment" button does work but wipes everything)

Workaround

  • Grant Terminal "App Management" or "Full Disk Access" in System Settings > Privacy & Security
  • Or use "Reset Environment" in the ComfyUI troubleshooting UI (which runs under the app's own permissions)

Environment

  • Platform: macOS Darwin 25.3.0 (Apple Silicon)
  • ComfyUI Desktop: v0.8.23

Hi, @snomiao. I'm Dosu, and I'm helping the desktop team manage their backlog and am marking this issue as stale.

Issue Summary

  • On macOS, the bundled .venv appears to be protected by App Management sandboxing, which prevents Terminal/iTerm from reading or modifying it.
  • Because of that protection, manual pip install repair attempts fail with PermissionError.
  • The issue asks for either documentation of the required macOS permissions or an in-app dependency repair/reinstall flow that does not rely on external terminal access.
  • There have been no additional comments or follow-up developments yet.

Next Steps

  • Please let us know if this is still relevant on the latest version of the desktop app.
  • If it is still reproducible, you can keep the discussion open by commenting here; otherwise, this issue will be automatically closed in 7 days.

Thanks for your understanding and contribution.
