@teward commented on GitHub (Nov 27, 2024):

I think having server and UI separate is beyond the scope of Desktop's intent. Desktop is intended as a one-stop-shop type tooling.

Linux installers are also finnicky. There's numerous considerations when it comes to Linux including how to bundle everything into one installer that works across multiple distros AND we have to worry about a lot more Python nuances in it (since the requisite is Python 3.12 in Windows/Mac that locks things down to a very narrow window of availability and support currently).

I'm working privately on a .deb installer package that will work for Ubuntu but it's very very slow work because of the complexities of storing things, etc. and making sure things still function etc. I also don't have any expected availability of such an installer either.

@teward If we can use tools like pixi to run ComfyUI, it will be simple to bundle specific python version, with other needed tools like git and so on into desktop in any os platform.

I think AppImage would be ideal, its portable and simple.

Hi, @ptits. I'm Dosu, and I'm helping the desktop team manage their backlog and am marking this issue as stale.

Issue Summary:

  • You requested a Linux version of the software with instructions for running the server on Linux and UI on Windows or Mac, considering it a major improvement.
  • The maintainer explained that separating server and UI is beyond the Desktop's scope and mentioned challenges with Linux installers and Python version constraints.
  • There is ongoing private work on a .deb package for Ubuntu, but no ETA has been provided.
  • Other users suggested alternatives like AppImage for portability and bundling Python/tools via pixi to ease cross-platform support.
  • The issue remains unresolved with no recent updates or progress reported.

Next Steps:

  • Please let me know if this issue is still relevant to the latest version of the desktop app by commenting here to keep the discussion open.
  • Otherwise, this issue will be automatically closed in 7 days.

Thank you for your understanding and contribution!

How difficult is it to package with appimage? Apparently we can

npx electron-builder --linux AppImage

but it doesn't allow auto-updates.

The initial support is very likely to be low effort. It's the ongoing maintenance where it starts to exact a toll.

100% bullshit excuse.

Flatpak solves this problem.
