Describe the bug

On macOS Tahoe (26.3.1–26.5), AmneziaVPN 4.8.15.4 cannot complete an AmneziaWG (amnezia-awg2) connection to a self-hosted VPS. The app stays on “Connecting…” (or disconnects after a few seconds). Application logs never show Parse command: connected or Handshake completed.

The same server and config work on iPhone on the same Wi‑Fi. On Mac, wg show on the server often shows no latest handshake, and tcpdump on UDP port 585 sometimes captures 0 packets while the client appears to be connecting.

Additional symptoms:

  • Routes 0.0.0.0/1 and 128.0.0.0/1 are installed via utun4, but traffic does not work (curl / DNS timeouts).
  • An active SSH session to the server IP freezes when VPN connect starts (server IP is routed into the dead tunnel unless a manual host route is added).
  • Site-based split tunneling (VpnAllExceptSites, route mode 2) does not fix the issue; logs still never show connected.
  • Internal route mode is often logged as Settings::VpnOnlyForwardSites while site split is disabled (route mode 0), which looks inconsistent.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install AmneziaVPN 4.8.15.4 on macOS Tahoe 26.5 (x86_64).
  2. Add a self-hosted server with AmneziaWG (container amnezia-awg2, UDP port 585).
  3. Confirm the same connection works on iOS (same Wi‑Fi, same server/config).
  4. On Mac, click Connect once and wait 30–60 seconds.
  5. Observe: UI shows Connecting… (or disconnects); no stable VPN.
  6. (Optional) While connecting, run on server: docker exec amnezia-awg2 wg show and tcpdump -ni eth0 udp port 585 → often no handshake / no UDP packets.
  7. (Optional) With SSH open to the server, click Connect → SSH session stops responding until VPN is disabled.

Expected behavior

  • After Daemon connected → Parse command: status, the client should proceed to Parse command: connected and Handshake completed.
  • VPN should reach Connected state; curl https://ifconfig.me should show the VPS public IP.
  • Server wg show should show latest handshake and increasing transfer.
  • Split tunnel exclusions (e.g. server IP) should work on macOS, or at least not leave the client stuck on status.

Log files

Attach the full application log file. Typical pattern on every attempt:

Trying to connect to VPN ... container is amnezia-awg2, route mode is Settings::VpnOnlyForwardSites
Site split tunneling is disabled, route mode is 0
LocalSocketController : Daemon connected
LocalSocketController : Parse command: status
... (no "connected", no "Handshake completed") ...
LocalSocketController : Deactivating
Parse command: disconnected
VpnProtocol::setConnectionState "Отключено"

When split tunnel was enabled:

route mode is Settings::VpnAllExceptSites
Site split tunneling is enabled, route mode is 2

Same result: only status, then disconnect — never connected.

Also seen:

Reconnect triggered on Connecting during inappropriate state ... ignoring

(Full log session: 2026-05-21, macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 → 26.5, AmneziaVPN 4.8.15.4.)

Screenshots

If applicable, add screenshots of:

  • Amnezia UI stuck on “Connecting…”
  • macOS System Settings → VPN (optional: other VPN profiles present)
  • ifconfig utun4 / netstat -rn showing 0/1 and 128.0/1 via utun4 while not fully connected

Desktop (please complete the following information)

  • OS: macOS Tahoe 26.5 (also reproduced on 26.3.1)
  • Architecture: x86_64
  • AmneziaVPN version: 4.8.15.4 (build 2edd7de)
  • Protocol: AmneziaWG (amnezia-awg2)
  • Other VPN profiles on system: Bebra, v2RayTun (Disconnected) — may contribute to route conflicts

Smartphone (please complete the following information)

  • Device: iPhone
  • OS: iOS (current, from App Store)
  • AmneziaVPN: current App Store build
  • Note: Same self-hosted server works on the same Wi‑Fi while Mac fails

Server (please complete the following information)

  • OS: Debian 11 (bullseye) on VPS (KVM)
  • Container: amnezia-awg2, listening UDP 585
  • docker ps: container Up, port 0.0.0.0:585->585/udp
  • Public IP: x.x.x.x (redacted)
  • nc -u -vz from Mac to server:585: succeeds when VPN is off
  • During failed Mac connect: often 0 UDP on 585 in tcpdump, no handshake in wg show
  • Peers: two peers were observed at one point (10.8.1.1/32 and 10.8.1.2/32); Mac client used 10.8.1.2 on utun4

Additional context

Likely related issues:

  • #1090 — same config works on iOS, not on macOS
  • #2554 — DNS / split routes on Tahoe
  • #2441 — site split tunnel not applied on macOS 26.3
  • #924 — split tunneling on macOS

Workarounds attempted:

  • sudo route add -host <server-ip> <wifi-gateway> before connect — helps SSH not freeze; does not consistently fix VPN handshake.
  • sudo networksetup -setdnsservers Wi-Fi 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1 — suggested in #2554 when tunnel is up but DNS is broken (not fully verified here because connected never appears in logs).

Other notes:

  • tccutil reset for org.amneziavpn.AmneziaVPN / com.yourcompany.AmneziaVPN failed (bundle not found); no macOS VPN permission prompt observed on first connect.
  • log stream for AmneziaVPN-service / wireguard-go shows little during connect on Tahoe; application logs are the main diagnostic source.

I’m experiencing the same issue. In addition, I can’t connect even to the Amnezia Premium servers, while my phone connects successfully from the same Wi-Fi network.

@Dimak47X commented on GitHub (May 22, 2026):

I have the same problem: my VPN (AmneziaWG 2.0 protocol) on MacOS (Tahoe 26.5) has stopped working recently (apparently related to a MacOS update). The Amnesia VPN app keeps stuttering "Connecting" and won't connect, while the Amnesia WG app switched its status to "Connected" but isn't receiving any packets.

The following workaround helped: go to System Preferences -> Network -> VPN and Filters. In the Filters and Proxy section, I had several filters enabled (Cisco AnyConnect, Kaspersky, and Radio Silence). I tried disabling them all (I had to first exit Cisco and Kaspersky apps), meaning I had a red dot in all the lines. After that, the VPN connected successfully (both in Amnesia VPN and Amnesia WG apps).

So, if you enable even one filter from the "Content Filter" category, the VPN stops working (it doesn't matter which app you enabled the filter for). If all of them are disabled then VPN start working normally. Updating the Amnezia VPN app to the latest version didn't help.

Of course if you want to use Cisco AnyConnect (like in my case) you have to start it and enable all filters back. It looks like something in MacOS broken under the hood in terms of network filtering.

yes, upgrading Tahoe 26.1 to Tahoe 26.5 did NOT affect bug with network filters.

Have the same. it looks like something is with DNS. I did roll back to previous versions, but without any success.
Helped only solution, when I fist connect Outline VPN, then Amnezia connects without any issues, and after that disconnecting Outline. Creasy, but it works and with connection to the same server.

Initially, I thought the problem was directly related to Roskomnadzor, since it initially appeared on Mac devices in Moscow. After two or three days, the server in Samara received the last handshake from the Mac at exactly 2 a.m.

I'm experiencing similar symptoms on MacOS Sonoma 14.6.1 (23G93). AWG2 broke a few days ago. I turned on Xray, it worked for a couple more days, and then also broke. Updating Amnezia to 4.8.15.4 didn't help.
The protocols work on other devices, including iOS devices, on the same networks.

Hi. I had a similar issue and managed to fix it — maybe it will be useful to someone here.

Of course if you want to use Cisco AnyConnect (like in my case) you have to start it and enable all filters back. It looks like something in MacOS broken under the hood in terms of network filtering.

This worked, many thanks (Sonoma 14.7.6). Disabled "Content filter" only.

Yes, it worked! Thank you very much =)
I have Cisco AnyConnect installed. I removed the filters, but I'll probably have to turn them on and off again. It's very inconvenient.
