Description

On Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4), the website build of AmneziaVPN takes 5-10 minutes
to connect when using AmneziaWG v2 protocol. The App Store build connects in under 10 seconds.

Root cause

The wireguard-go binary shipped in the website build is x86_64 only:

$ file /Applications/AmneziaVPN.app/Contents/MacOS/wireguard-go
/Applications/AmneziaVPN.app/Contents/MacOS/wireguard-go: Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

On Apple Silicon it runs under Rosetta 2, which causes a very long startup time.
The App Store build for iOS ships a native binary (arm64), which is why it works fine. Simple install it in your Mac

Steps to reproduce

  1. Download AmneziaVPN from the official website (not App Store)
  2. Install on Apple Silicon Mac (tested on M4 Pro)
  3. Add AmneziaWG v2 connection
  4. Press Connect — takes 5-10 minutes

From the logs, the delay is entirely between daemon receiving the connect command
and wireguard-go completing startup:

[20:54:13] Parse command: status ← connect initiated
[21:01:10] Parse command: connected ← 7 minutes later

Environment

  • macOS Tahoe 26.3.1
  • AmneziaVPN 4.8.15.4 (website build)
  • Hardware: MacBook Pro M4 Pro
  • Protocol: AmneziaWG v2

Fix

Ship wireguard-go as a native binary (arm64) in the website build,
same as the App Store build.

Did you check if it fixes the problem when network filters are enabled? I have a hypothesis that Intel code messes up with modern network filtering API. I'm not a developer, just curious.
