After building from the repository https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/amneziavpn-bin, I encountered Error 103. The package is completely inoperable, only the shell runs. Rolling back to the previous version helps, as there's no clear solution.

Hi, I maintain the AUR package. It's impossible for a service file to be missing from a package. Otherwise, makepkg will simply fail, and the package won't build. The service file is located at /usr/lib/systemd/system/AmneziaVPN.service.

Please check if the AmneziaVPN.service is running using the command:

systemctl status AmneziaVPN.service

If you see something like:

○ AmneziaVPN.service - AmneziaVPN Service
     Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/AmneziaVPN.service; disabled; preset: disabled)
     Active: inactive (dead)

Try to enable/start it manually.

sudo systemctl enable --now AmneziaVPN.service

And restart your computer; this will help avoid situations where the service is running, but nothing happens when you click "Connect" button.

The package's installation script behaves as follows:

Post install:

  • The script enables and starts AmneziaVPN.service.

Post upgrade:

  • The script restarts AmneziaVPN.service if it was active. This means that if the user manually disabled/stopped the service, it will not start.

Pre remove:

  • The script disables and stops AmneziaVPN.service.

  1. I completely removed Amnezia including the /opt/AmneziaVPN/ folder sudo rm -r /opt/AmneziaVPN/
  2. Reassembled successfully
  3. Got the same result

As I see, there was a service in the opt folder in version 4, but it is not in version 5.

But why?

If you installed a package from the AUR, remove it using pacman.

sudo pacman -Rnsc amneziavpn-bin

If you installed it using the official installer, remove it by running maintenancetool.

/opt/AmneziaVPN/maintenancetool

I think the problem is that you incorrectly removed the official installation, before installing AUR version, and now remnants like /etc/systemd/system/AmneziaVPN.service conflicting with AUR's /usr/lib/systemd/system/AmneziaVPN.service.

I checked three times, and the installation behaved the same way. Now I installed the binary file and everything is fine.

I'm currently using version 5.0.0.5 from AUR and it works great.

Everything broke in version 5.x because the program's file structure changed. The service file left over from an improper uninstall of the official 4.x version overrode the one installed by the AUR package. This is expected behavior, as configurations in /etc/systemd always take precedence over configurations in /usr/lib/systemd.
