Describe the bug

After upgrading my self-hosted server from AmneziaWG 2.0 to AmneziaWG 3.1, VPN download speed became extremely low on a Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro.

The projector reaches approximately 100 Mbps without VPN, but only 8–9 Mbps through AmneziaWG 3.1.

The same self-hosted server provides approximately 120 Mbps through AmneziaWG 3.1 on a Xiaomi 14T smartphone. Therefore, the VPS bandwidth does not appear to be the bottleneck.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5 on a Windows x64 computer.
  2. Remove the existing AmneziaWG 2.0 container from a self-hosted server.
  3. Install AmneziaWG again through AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5, which deploys AmneziaWG 3.1.
  4. Create a new guest connection for the AmneziaWG protocol.
  5. Install AmneziaVPN_5.0.1.5_android9-10_armeabi-v7a.apk on a Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro.
  6. Connect to the self-hosted server and run a speed test.
  7. Download speed is limited to approximately 8 Mbps.
  8. Export a native AmneziaWG .conf file and import it into the standalone AmneziaWG Android application version v3.1.20260814.
  9. Run the speed test again. Speed remains approximately 9 Mbps.

Expected behavior

The projector should provide reasonable VPN throughput. Some protocol overhead is expected, but a reduction from approximately 100 Mbps without VPN to 8–9 Mbps with AmneziaWG 3.1 appears excessive.

Log files

Not attached yet. Please advise which AmneziaVPN/AmneziaWG client logs and server logs would be useful for diagnosing this performance issue.

Screenshots

Speed-test screenshots can be provided if required.

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Windows x64
  • Version: AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5

Smartphone (please complete the following information):

  • Device: Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro
  • OS: Android TV 9
  • CPU: Amlogic T972-H
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Architecture: armeabi-v7a
  • Version: AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5
  • Standalone client: AmneziaWG Android v3.1.20260814

Server (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Unknown, self-hosted server managed through AmneziaVPN
  • Location: Netherlands
  • Protocol: AmneziaWG 3.1
  • Transport: UDP
  • Port: 585
  • Installation method: AmneziaWG 2.0 was removed and AmneziaWG was installed again through AmneziaVPN 5.0.1.5

Additional context

Speed comparison:

  • Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro without VPN: approximately 100 Mbps
  • Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro with AWG 3.1 in AmneziaVPN: approximately 8 Mbps
  • Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro with standalone AmneziaWG 3.1: approximately 9 Mbps
  • Xiaomi 14T without VPN: approximately 620 Mbps
  • Xiaomi 14T with AWG 3.1 through the same self-hosted server: approximately 120 Mbps

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Tested automatic/default MTU.
  • Tested MTU 1280.
  • Tested MTU 1200.
  • MTU changes improved speed by only approximately 3 Mbps.
  • MTU 1280 solved a separate download-speed problem on Windows, but did not solve the Android TV performance problem.
  • Tested both the full AmneziaVPN application and the standalone AmneziaWG 3.1 application.
  • Rebooted and reconnected the Android TV device.
  • The network connection itself is not limited to 8–9 Mbps because the projector reaches approximately 100 Mbps without VPN.

Relevant sanitized AWG settings:

MTU = 1280
Jc = 6
Jmin = 10
Jmax = 50
S1 = 134
S2 = 86
S3 = 33
S4 = 12
ContentPaddingAddition = 10-100
RandomTrailers = on
DisableCookies = on
PersistentKeepalive = 25-35

Private keys, preshared keys, server IP address and HeaderProtectionKey have been omitted.

The results suggest a possible performance regression in the AmneziaWG 3.1 armeabi-v7a backend or excessive processing overhead from AWG 3.1 transport obfuscation on 32-bit Android TV devices.
