The menu bar icon on MacOS is white on a light menu bar when connected. This looks weird and not like any other menu bar icons (which are black on a light menu bar). I think this is a mistake, the idea was (should be?) that the icon is semi-transparent when VPN is not connected and fully opaque when connected, but the color of the icon should depend on the current system theme (white or black) so that the icon would be same as all other menu bar icons.

The current state is:

Dark theme (not connected) - white color, semi-transparent (OK)

Not always. System icons can be white as well, it depends on background contrast, not theme. Here's the example when light theme is active:
