It seems this should greatly facilitate the installation. If all dependencies are included in the application.

Publication on https://flathub.org/ would bring more popularity to the project.

Meanwhile, NordVPN developers have created an official Snap: https://snapcraft.io/nordvpn. It turns out that wrapping a VPN client in a modern cross-distribution package is quite feasible.

Flatpak is, unfortunately, not a feasible option, as Amnezia VPN relies on a privileged daemon to set the VPN up. Snap does provide a way to do it, but is its own can of worms for other reasons.

Perhaps the VPN setup could be implemented differently in Amnezia to make distribution via Flathub possible? There are a few existing VPN implementations on Flathub available for study today:

From a quick look:

  1. Proton, Mozilla: rely on an existing NetworkManager plugin, meaning a custom protocol can't be used. Basically fancy config installers.
  2. Surfshark: proprietary app, but seemingly the same?
  3. Nym: only the GUI frontend is packaged, the daemon must be installed separately. This is most applicable, but also has relatively limited utility.
