It is an issue that affects all immutable distros, it seems like. Same for Bazzite.
It does kind of install, but doesn't install its service (well, duh - it's immutable), and doesn't finish installation. Doesn't even put a .desktop file in your software list.
To find out about what's broken I had to find the application launch script in /usr/local/bin/

Image

Please just make an appimage or a flatpak. Flatpak preferred. There is A LOT of immutable distros. SteamOS and its lookalikes are just the most common ones.
Do you seriously expect people with Steam Decks to have to sit down and turn every single router they connect to into an OpenWRT Amnezia connection hub? Even in public spaces? It's a portable device. You take it with you to places.

It did install. The service is there, and it only works when I manually sudo ./opt/AmneziaVPN/service/AmneziaVPN-service.sh
In the list of system services it's enabled, but simply broken.

Reinstallation doesn't help. Will keep attempting to manually fix it.

What I got so far is:
Proper installation for immutables means modifying the system.
For arch-based SteamOS-likes there is AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/amneziavpn-bin (be aware that SteamOS often wipes AURs upon update; keep config backups). Look up guides how to install AUR packages onto SteamOS/HoloISO or what have you.
For fedora-based SteamOS-likes, the closest thing I found is some guy maintaining RPM on Alt Linux: https://packages.altlinux.org/en/sisyphus/srpms/amnezia-vpn/
I'm still looking for .repo file of the sisyphus repo to install it via rpm-ostree in an updatable fashion.

UPD: this Alt Linux RPM doesn't seem to be working on a fedoralike, or perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

On bazzite /etc, /usr/local and /opt is OK. But /usr is not.

Works great on Bazzite. Here is the solution to the service problem.

right now tried to solve same problem with error 103, have 2 solutions:

  1. use official linux installer which must be reinstalled after each update (or maybe use aur with the same effect)
  2. install amnezia-vpn nix package. It requires a bit of magic:
2.1. add support for opengl native drivers: https://nix-community.github.io/home-manager/index.xhtml#sec-usage-gpu-sudo (or use software rendering)
2.2. launch AmneziaVPN-service manually with sudo (it is located in path: sudo /home/deck/.nix-profile/bin/AmneziaVPN-service)

Hi, I'm the AUR package maintainer. I don't have the ability to test the package in an immutable distribution. But in theory, if the problem is simply that the service file isn't installed in /usr/lib/, you can manually extract the /usr/lib/systemd/system/AmneziaVPN.service file from the .pkg.tar.zst package and place it in /etc/systemd/system/. Then enable/start the service.

sudo systemctl enable --now AmneziaVPN.service

If I have some extra time, I'll see if it's possible to automate this during installation. For now, anyone can simply edit the PKGBUILD file locally to adjust the installation path for the AmneziaVPN.service file.

Works like a charm in desktop mode, but cannot figure out how to launch it in gaming mode. Getting 103 error

Same, I installed via .bin file and it doesn't work, just doesn't connect no matter how many times I try (AmneziaWG config).

Bazzite 44, AmneziaVPN installed via .bin file. Same thing, I can connect to Free servers, but when I'm trying to connect to my AWG server, it shows "Connected" button, but I'm losing Internet connection entirely.

@Inui-senpai, @GeorgyDesign - the "shows Connected but Internet stops" pattern usually comes from one of three things on the server side, separately from the Bazzite/SteamOS-specific service file work above.

A few quick checks that often catch it:

  1. On the AWG server: awg show awg0 while the client is "Connected". If latest handshake updates but transfer: stays near zero, the handshake is fine and the data path is the problem (most often NAT / iptables -t nat -L POSTROUTING missing the masquerade rule, or net.ipv4.ip_forward=0).

  2. Client AllowedIPs: full-tunnel needs AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0. Split routes without 10.9.9.0/24 (or whatever your tunnel subnet is) explicitly in there break handshake-keepalive and look like "Connected, no traffic".

  3. DNS leak masking it: if the AWG client sets a public DNS like 1.1.1.1 but the local resolver on the Steam Deck overrides it back to LAN DNS, the tunnel is fine but DNS doesn't traverse it - looks like "no Internet".

Immutable distros also fight systemd-resolved integration harder than regular Fedora/Arch (atomic /usr means service overlays get tricky), which compounds the above.

Disclosure: I maintain a bash installer for headless AWG 2.0 servers (bivlked/amneziawg-installer) - not the desktop client. If anyone has access to the server they're connecting to and wants to sanity-check the server config quickly, the manage diagnose command in there prints ip_forward, NAT, service state, and AWG parameters in one go.
