Describe the bug

AmneziaVPN fails to start on Ubuntu 25.10 "Questing Quokka" due to missing Qt6 runtime dependencies. The application installs successfully but crashes immediately when launched from the desktop menu or command line.

To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install AmneziaVPN (tested with version 4.8.12.9) on Ubuntu 25.10 using the Linux installer
  2. Launch AmneziaVPN from the application menu or run AmneziaVPN from terminal
  3. Application crashes immediately with "Aborted (core dumped)"
  4. No GUI window appears

Expected behavior

AmneziaVPN should launch and display the main application window.

Log files

Initial error:
/opt/AmneziaVPN/client/bin/AmneziaVPN: error while loading shared libraries: libOpenGL.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

After installing libopengl0:

qt.qpa.plugin: Could not find the Qt platform plugin "wayland" in "/opt/AmneziaVPN/client/plugins//platforms:"
qt.qpa.plugin: From 6.5.0, xcb-cursor0 or libxcb-cursor0 is needed to load the Qt xcb platform plugin.
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "/opt/AmneziaVPN/client/plugins//platforms:" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: linuxfb, offscreen, xcb, minimal, minimalegl, eglfs.

Aborted (core dumped)

Desktop Information

  • OS: Ubuntu 25.10 "Questing Quokka"
  • Desktop Environment: GNOME (Wayland session)
  • AmneziaVPN Version: 4.8.12.9
  • Kernel: Linux 6.17.0-8-generic

Workaround

The issue can be resolved by manually installing the missing Qt6 dependencies:

sudo apt install libopengl0 qt6-wayland libxcb-cursor0

Additional Context

The AmneziaVPN Linux installer does not automatically install these required Qt6 dependencies on Ubuntu/Debian-based systems. This appears to be specific to newer Ubuntu versions (25.10) which may have different default package selections.

Suggested Fix:

Update the Linux installer to check for and install these dependencies on Ubuntu/Debian-based systems, or document these requirements in the installation instructions.

The same problem.
I got AmneziaVPN 4.8.12.9-1 to launch on Ubuntu 24.04 and Arch Linux by installing qt6-wayland. however, the client behaves erratically — the connect button is glitchy and no connection is established.

I’ve written a simple CLI wrapper for awg-quick that lets you run AmneziaWG on Linux from the terminal as a lightweight alternative to the GUI.
It works seamlessly with AmneziaWG v2 configs and is fast and convenient to use. You can continue using the AmneziaWG UI to generate configuration files.
