It is generally considered bad practice on Linux to install software using custom installers or scripts. Packages installed this way are harder to update or uninstall cleanly, since the system package manager cannot track the files they install. This can lead to various issues and, in some cases, even break the system.

It would be great if the Amnezia client could be distributed as native packages, for example via APT on Debian/Ubuntu and DNF on Fedora, so it can be managed properly by the system package manager.

This also affects immutable distributions. See https://github.com/amnezia-vpn/amnezia-client/issues/555

@azaviyalov commented on GitHub (Apr 9, 2026):

I’ve run into additional dependency issues on upcoming Ubuntu 26.04.

Besides the packages mentioned in the release notes (libxcb-cursor0, libxcb-xinerama0), the following are also required:

  • libxcb-icccm4
  • libxcb-keysyms1
  • libxcb-xkb1
  • libxkbcommon-x11-0
  • libopengl0

Currently, all dependencies have to be installed manually. As the number of required packages grows, this makes the setup more fragile and error-prone.

This seems like another argument in favor of providing native packages (deb/rpm), so dependencies can be resolved automatically by the system package manager.
