Previous version installed fine, but the upgrade fails:

# command: make -j8 KERNELRELEASE=6.12.43+deb13-amd64 -C /var/lib/dkms/amneziawg/1.0.0/build
make: Entering directory '/var/lib/dkms/amneziawg/1.0.0/build'
/var/lib/dkms/amneziawg/1.0.0/build/Kbuild:22: /var/lib/dkms/amneziawg/1.0.0/build/compat/Kbuild.include: No such file or directory

I examined previous and current deb package, the new one is missing a lot of source code files.

Before upgrade:

# ls /usr/src/amneziawg-1.0.0/ | wc -l
38

After upgrade:

# ls /usr/src/amneziawg-1.0.0/ | wc -l
6

It is not about linux headers, amneziawg sources are missing.

Yep got same problem on Deb12.

My workaround:

  1. Got somewhere (from my old box) /usr/src/amneziawg-1.0.0/ folder and unpack to the same path on the new server.
    There are just sources so nothing wrong with it.
  2. Then run dkms install amneziawg/1.0.0 and awg was successfully installed.

Got this error too on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS fresh install, so I think 20251002 is some of buggy version.

For Ubuntu 24.04.3 workaround is the same, as @hiddener (https://github.com/amnezia-vpn/amneziawg-linux-kernel-module/issues/91#issuecomment-3362243900) suggest: I took previous package for 24.04 at https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/amnezia/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/a/amneziawg-linux-kmod/ and install it with dpkg, then mark hold. After that amneziawg was successfully installed and working now.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for reporting the issue

Apologize for the inconvenience, there were previously build changes introduced, which by my mistake actually have broken dkms functionality. Everything should work as expected on the latest master
Also, a release tag was made to be v1.0.20251004
PPA repo would be fixed once it sync the changes

Thank you.

I just tried the new release on kernel 6.1.0-40-amd64 and encountered build errors.
This kernel already includes get_random_u32_below and get_random_u32_inclusive.

Therefore, it was necessary to (quick and dirty) update your preprocessor check in compat.h from:
#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE < KERNEL_VERSION(6, 2, 0)
to
#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE < KERNEL_VERSION(6, 0, 0)

github.com/amnezia-vpn/amneziawg-linux-kernel-module@8a55ceb761/src/compat/compat.h (L1221)

After making this change, I was able to successfully compile the DKMS module.

That's because I have made an error during refactoring of dkms.conf and it was fixed by github.com/amnezia-vpn/amneziawg-linux-kernel-module@8a55ceb761

It will be fixed once PPA sync the changes, as I have mentioned above

Sorry for boring you, I didn't realize that your changed PACKAGE_VERSION="2.0.0" in dkms.conf affected the path or source be copied.
I have now looked at my dkms.conf on broken install, and your change is already there: PACKAGE_VERSION="2.0.0"

<!-- gh-comment-id:3368356874 --> @Rockstein2 commented on GitHub (Oct 4, 2025): @ygurov is DKMSDIR defined over cmd line or some there else? if I look in src/Makefile, DKMSDIR evals to "amneziawg-1.0.0" <code> WIREGUARD_VERSION = 1.0.0 ... DKMSDIR ?= $(SRCDIR)/amneziawg-$(WIREGUARD_VERSION) ... dkms-install: $(DKMS_SOURCES) @$(foreach f,$(DKMS_SOURCES),install -v -m0644 -D $(f) $(DESTDIR)$(DKMSDIR)/$(f);) </code>

@ygurov commented on GitHub (Oct 4, 2025):

@Rockstein2,
Yes, but PACKAGE_VERSION from dkms.conf did not correlate with WIREGUARD_VERSION defined in Makefile
So Makefile did install it to the one directory, and dkms did expect it in the other

@rseleven
it is the same thing I posted.
Just rename /usr/src/amneziawg-1.0.0 to 2.0.0

If you look into the fresh deb package from launchpad
amneziawg-dkms_1.0.0-0202510031931+b0db37dubuntu22.04.1_all.deb

under CONTENTS/usr/src are two folders amneziawg-1.0.0 with full src and amneziawg-2.0.0 with only dkms.conf

@rseleven
or just wait until launchpad rebuild the deb with PACKAGE_VERSION="1.0.0" in dkms.conf
