Geopolitical & Supply Chain Risk Analysis
Current Sanctions Landscape (May 2026)
The US export controls have evolved through 5 rounds since October 2022:
Supply Chain Bottlenecks
Critical Dependency Map for DeepSeek
Strategic Recommendations
1. Immediate (0-6 months)
2. Medium-term (6-18 months)
3. Long-term (18-36 months)
The Huawei Partnership
DeepSeek + Huawei Ascend is not just a technical choice — it's a geopolitical hedge. The partnership:
Risk: Over-dependence on Huawei could become a single point of failure if Huawei faces its own sanctions escalation.
Recommendation
DeepSeek should maintain no less than 3 independent compute supply chains simultaneously: (1) Huawei Ascend for domestic production, (2) NVIDIA gray channel for peak demand, (3) Singapore/HKG node for unrestricted access. The cost of triple redundancy is high, but the cost of compute blockade is existential.
This analysis was produced as part of the APEX 2026 research project.
