I'm able to start Steam, and download games, but when I attempt to run a game, I get an AMDGPU crash. The same games work if I run them on the bare metal without games on whales.

docker-compose.yml

services:
  wolf:
    image: ghcr.io/games-on-whales/wolf:wolf-ui
    container_name: gow
    environment:
      - WOLF_LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG
      - XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/sockets
      - HOST_APPS_STATE_FOLDER=/etc/wolf
      - WOLF_RENDER_NODE=/dev/dri/renderD128
      #- WOLF_ENCODER_NODE=/dev/dri/renderD130
    volumes:
      - /etc/wolf/:/etc/wolf
      - /tmp/sockets:/tmp/sockets:rw
      - /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock:rw
      - /dev/:/dev/:rw
      - /run/udev:/run/udev:rw
    device_cgroup_rules:
      - 'c 13:* rmw'
    devices:
      - /dev/dri
      - /dev/uinput
      - /dev/uhid

    network_mode: host
    restart: unless-stopped

Games on whales log: gow.txt

General potentially useful information:

  • The host is NixOS
  • The host has 3 graphics devices (9070XT, Radeon 7600, and my 9800X3D's iGPU)
  • /dev/dri/renderD128 is the 9070XT

Post-filing updates:

  • This seems to be a 9070XT exclusive, if I change my WOLF_RENDER_NODE to D129 (Radeon 7600) or D130 (iGPU) games work.

@Azelphur commented on GitHub (Nov 16, 2025):

This issue appears to be due to outdated libraries (mesa?) - I noticed the steam image was running Ubuntu 24.10, and figured I'd try updating it on a hunch. Everything works after I made a modified version of the Steam app that runs on Ubuntu 25.04.

Our base images are already on 25.05, have you tried just pulling latest?

docker pull ghcr.io/games-on-whales/steam:edge

i think he means FROM ubuntu:24.10 AS bwrap-builder changed to 25.05. i tried this aswell, and my 5090 got ingame with proton 10 correct (without VKD3D_VULKAN_DEVICE=0 )

Yes, what Gylfkxjydll says is correct, that is what I did (and then rebuilt, adding it as a new app).

However, after pulling the latest steam, my issue is resolved, so I'm gonna close this, maybe Gylfkxjydll can open a separate issue to get the Dockerfile updated if necessary :)
