Area

Setup, packaging, or upgrade

Observed behavior

Approved Hermes setup cannot refresh an existing REA registration when that entry defines a YAML anchor referenced by another server. The server table is an ordinary mapping. Setup accepts the configuration and plans an update and backup, but fails before publishing the update because the replacement no longer defines the anchor needed by the unrelated alias.

The public CLI exits 1 with status: "needs_human", Hermes status: "failed", reason: "write", no applied actions, and a file-permissions remediation. The original configuration remains unchanged, and the backup matches it exactly. File permissions are sufficient to create the backup. The equivalent explicit-mapping control succeeds, returning ready, exit 0, and an aligned Hermes registration.

Reproduction

  1. Prepare a clean checkout at the baseline, install its locked dependencies, and build the source-checkout CLI. Run the remaining steps from the checkout root. The dependency and build commands are prerequisites; the observed CLI calls used an already installed and built checkout.
git clone https://github.com/morluto/rea.git rea-hermes-anchor-repro
cd rea-hermes-anchor-repro
git checkout 8dde6370d0809ad04cda3342d4e6f290f48aa063
npm ci
npm run build:cached
  1. Run the following command to create the complete YAML input in a disposable home and invoke approved setup. The minimal environment excludes ambient client-location overrides. The command removes its disposable files on completion and does not change an existing user configuration.
python3 - <<'PYCODE'
import json
import os
from pathlib import Path
import subprocess
import tempfile

with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as directory:
    home = Path(directory) / "home"
    folder = home / ".hermes"
    folder.mkdir(parents=True)
    config = folder / "config.yaml"
    original = 'mcp_servers:\n  rea: &server\n    command: rea\n    args: [mcp]\n  other: *server\n'
    config.write_text(original)
    environment = {
        "PATH": os.environ["PATH"],
        "HOME": str(home),
        "HOPPER_LAUNCHER_PATH": str(home / "absent-hopper"),
    }
    command = ["node", "scripts/rea.mjs", "setup", "--client", "hermes", "--skill=false", "--yes", "--json"]
    process = subprocess.run(command, env=environment, capture_output=True, text=True)
    report = json.loads(process.stdout)
    print(json.dumps({"exit": process.returncode, "status": report["status"], "clientStatus": report["clients"]["hermes"]["status"], "reason": report["clients"]["hermes"].get("reason"), "appliedActions": report["appliedActions"], "remediation": report.get("remediation")}))
    print("original preserved:", config.read_text() == original)
    print("backup matches:", Path(str(config) + ".rea.backup").read_text() == original)
PYCODE
  1. Observe the exit code, failed Hermes status, write reason, empty applied actions, misleading permissions remediation, preserved original, and matching backup shown under Relevant output or evidence.

  2. Run the same command again in a fresh disposable home, changing only the original assignment to the following equivalent explicit mappings. This is the executed workaround and discriminating control; the setup command and environment remain the same.

original = 'mcp_servers:\n  rea:\n    command: rea\n    args: [mcp]\n  other:\n    command: rea\n    args: [mcp]\n'

The control returns ready, exit 0, and an aligned Hermes registration. Its complete YAML input is:

mcp_servers:
  rea:
    command: rea
    args: [mcp]
  other:
    command: rea
    args: [mcp]

Expected behavior

Setup should refresh the selected REA registration while preserving the existing resolved command and arguments of the unrelated server. The accepted YAML configuration should remain valid, have a verified backup, and produce an enabled, aligned REA registration. docs/client-configuration.md:226-230 promises an enabled Hermes registration while preserving comments and unrelated settings; docs/installation.md:59-60 promises preserved entries, backups, atomic replacement, and verified results.

Impact and scope

Impact is P2, supported. Users sharing an anchored REA server definition cannot refresh that registration through setup. The original configuration remains unchanged, leaving REA stale, with no observed data loss. The failure concerns REA's configuration transaction; no Hermes process was started.

A verified workaround is available. Expand the unrelated alias into its original command and arguments and remove the unused anchor, as in the explicit-mapping control. This preserved the unrelated server's original resolved settings and made setup succeed in a fresh home.

REA version

6.4.0 (main at 8dde6370d0)

Runtime and platform

Node.js 26.10.0 on macOS 27.0.1, using the built source-checkout CLI. Architecture was not recorded. No analysis engine or running client is required for these observations.

Target and artifact context

Synthetic Hermes .hermes/config.yaml containing an ordinary mcp_servers mapping, an existing rea: &server registration, and an unrelated other: *server entry. The input and .rea.backup remain inside a disposable home. No binary target or analysis artifact is required.

Interface

CLI

Earliest failure stage

Setup or provider admission

Relevant output or evidence

The public CLI reproduction produced:

{"exit": 1, "status": "needs_human", "clientStatus": "failed", "reason": "write", "appliedActions": [], "remediation": "Agent configuration could not be updated. Check file permissions, then rerun setup."}
original preserved: True
backup matches: True

Both the anchored-entry fixture and the equivalent explicit-mapping control were executed through the public CLI. The original file and exact backup were read back after the failure. A separate executed call to the bundled YAML editor on the accepted failing fixture reported the following before publication:

Unresolved alias (the anchor must be set before the alias): server

Typed outcome or recovery expected

Run setup on the anchored-entry fixture. It must refresh and verify REA while the unrelated other server still resolves to its original command and arguments. The resulting YAML must parse successfully, the original backup must match, and a second setup call must be idempotent. Keep the expanded-alias control passing. Removing the other server, redirecting its alias to the new REA settings, or leaving REA stale does not restore preservation and refresh together.

Analysis or suspected cause

Source-derived reasoning: src/application/HermesConfigurationYaml.ts:326-354 performs the edit using document.setIn and then serializes the document. Replacing the REA node removes the anchor that the unrelated alias still references, which explains the separately observed unresolved-alias error. src/application/SetupClientConfiguration.ts:282-302 serializes the approved update and reduces serialization exceptions to a write failure, explaining the public result's generic permissions remediation. The primary failure evidence is the executed public CLI transaction; the bundled-editor call and equivalent-mapping control corroborate it.

Additional context

  • #2515 concerns successful Hermes setup/uninstall changing unrelated integer keys; this report concerns an anchor-dependent refresh that fails before publishing any configuration change.
  • #2514 concerns comment-only or marker-only Hermes YAML; this report has a populated ordinary mapping accepted by preflight.
  • #1606 concerns lost valid environment overrides inside REA's own registration; this report requires preserving another server's resolved settings when replacing an anchored REA node.
  • #1633 concerns a Hermes first-run version warning after configuration creation; this report fails REA's refresh transaction without starting Hermes.

Cross-referencing with #3320 ([Bug] Hermes setup fails to register REA through an aliased MCP server table). Both issues isolate defects in Hermes YAML configuration parsing and anchor preservation during rea setup --client hermes.

Consolidated under Cluster R (Hermes Client Setup & MCP Configuration Anchors) in tracker #4330.

@xu91102 commented on GitHub (Oct 17, 2026):

Independently reproduced on current main 7e4eed9dd48485b6a7100300aa98401811c2deb9 with the built public CLI (macOS arm64, Node 24.18.0). Four calls used separate isolated homes and an existing REA registration pointing to this checkout's actual Node/CLI paths:

Existing configuration Call Observed result
rea: &server, followed by unrelated other: *server approved setup, skill disabled exit 1, needs_human, Hermes failed / write
Equivalent expanded mappings same setup exit 0, ready
Anchored REA entry and unrelated alias uninstall exit 1, failed
Equivalent expanded mappings uninstall exit 0, complete

Both failing calls preserved the original file and created an exact backup. The successful controls preserved the original backup too. No Hermes agent/model was started, and no existing user configuration was used.

I read the actual production diffs of #3785 and #1732 before selecting this root. #3785 materializes aliased parent tables and explicitly excludes this anchored-entry problem; #1732 retains entry fields and does not repair disappearing YAML anchor definitions. The current YAML writer replaces/deletes the selected node while another accepted configuration node still refers to that node's anchor. I am investigating preservation at that shared YAML editing boundary; no patch, upstream PR or CI result is being claimed yet.

Update: the shared-writer fix is now committed and normally pushed to my fork as 79eb0d82b07ae2655bbf72a41c75cf7edece7aee, based on the reproduced main7e4eed9. It preserves external consumers of anchors removed with the REA entry, including anchored children, original nested bindings when names repeat, shared retained copies and alias comments. Unresolved/cyclic copied dependencies still refuse the write. It does not implement editing through an aliased parent table (#3320/#3785) or general entry-field retention (#1732).

Executed verification on macOS arm64 / Node24.18.0:

  • Same immutable registration bytes on baseline/fixed CLI: anchored setup and uninstall change from exit1 to0; expanded controls remain exit0. Failed baseline originals and exact backups survive.
  • Final coverage is four distinct focused files75PASS plus README5, total five files80PASS/0skip. The final owner-only20 rerun replaces overlapping20; other three inputs stayed unchanged. Earlier RED and overlapping runs are not added. An independent review exposed missing nested alias comments; two controls first failed, the shared fix now passes them, and final independent Standards/Spec source reviews passed.
  • Full check/docs/test discovery passed (1564 files once); actual local package verification passed. A freshly packed and installed tarball completed six Hermes layouts and30 public CLI lifecycle calls, with healthy doctor, exact original backups, stable repeat setup/uninstall and nested comments retained.
  • The unmodified official Hermes hermes_yaml reader at e6cf2a9b1e8f98d40408b09a9a55993c8459b4b4 and its pure fallback decoded18 installed-package snapshots36 times, preserving unrelated values and input bytes (Python3.12.14, ruamel.yaml0.18.16/clib0.2.15). Reused-anchor fixtures retain the official reader's original warning and successful fallback.

Full Hermes agent/model/stdio-client operation, Windows/Linux and performance remain NOT RUN. No upstream PR or Actions run exists for this fork preparation; these results do not qualify later main or substitute for human readiness. No user configurations or provider/target execution were involved.

Update 2026-10-19: upstream Draft PR #5152 now exists at 30e8770c3810c7bb7ee3f7b3db5bb605f7377184. The earlier no-upstream-PR statement above describes the original 7e fork preparation. This normal merge includes captured main d3627b10382b0f28b12cad1543634e165470b29a and its changed shared configuration consumers; the contribution remains five files against that main.

Before this integration, four actual current-main public CLI calls again showed anchored setup/uninstall exit1 and expanded controls exit0. Current main refuses the anchored cases before creating a backup and preserves the original; the older 7e backup observations above are not transferred. Current integrated verification on macOS arm64 / Node24.18.0 is four focused files75PASS/0skip in one artifact-lock-protected run plus README5, five distinct files80PASS. Check/docs/discovery (1607 files once), complete installed-package verification (REA MCP207 tools/6 prompts, exact-release update and cleanup/lineage), and explicit pack dry-run passed. A current tarball's six layouts/30 installed CLI lifecycle calls preserve exact backups, repeat bytes and nested comments; all1792 installed regular files match the tarball. The pinned unchanged official Hermes reader and real pure fallback read18 current snapshots36 times. Independent current Standards and Spec source reviews both passed; normal commit/push hooks preserved the frozen4399 raw files and5 gitlinks.

The first integrated focused attempt had3FAIL/72PASS; its complete log is retained. Later locked replay passed without a production repair for those three failures, whose original cause remains NOT_ESTABLISHED. The initial package-update run was cancelled after a direct Node registry request timed out; enabling the existing configured proxy produced the complete successful run, after the owned child family settled.

PR #5152 remains Draft. All three human declarations and the before-merge checklist remain unchecked. Actions were queued at publication readback; no final upstream CI conclusion is claimed here. Full Hermes agent/model/stdio client, Windows/Linux and performance remain NOT_RUN. Neither local source reviews nor package MCP inventory substitutes for those scopes or human readiness. No issue close call or foreign PR response was made.

Current review repair (2026-10-19)

The issue-linked upstream PR is now #5152, final pushed source head 9468c1db7d50bfebfbb855f824596bd1c8411b6f. Its actual integrated main is d3627b10382b0f28b12cad1543634e165470b29a; later-main full acceptance is not claimed.

Concrete review feedback exposed anchors on a deleted mapping key. The shared YAML editor now includes the removed key and value, preserves surviving external anchor owners and their original sharing, and keeps reused-name bindings consistent. Regression assertions check object identity, not only equal values. Both independent Standards and Spec source reviews pass on the final frozen inputs; normal hooks/commit/forkpush and exact upstream head/body readback are complete.

Final validation: one four-file focused run88PASS plus5 fresh README checks =93 distinct PASS/0skip; complete check/docs/discovery/package gates; a fresh tarball's1792 installed files match packed/current bytes; ten layouts /50 real installed CLI lifecycle calls; pinned unmodified official Hermes YAML reader plus actual pure fallback decode30 snapshots60 times with sharing and peer-binding identity assertions. Previous RED/SpecFAIL/harness evidence remains retained.

The specific Codex thread was answered with the structural repair, validation and cleanup evidence, read back, then resolved after delivery. Current head CI is pending. Full Hermes agent/model/stdio-client, other host platforms, performance and human readiness remain unverified. The external nonDraft state and all three human/eight before-merge declarations are preserved. This update does not close the issue or claim the PR is merged.

Current upstream verification (2026-10-20)

Another actor normally merged main bf1eeee94fd4677c793243a96542543b46c7c78e into PR #5152, producing baea65630bcccb0052fb380bee896576ff21e682. The five contribution blobs and their patch relative to that integrated main match the previously reviewed 9468c1d source. No local source synchronization or new push was needed for this external merge.

Exact-current-head CI completed successfully: 32 jobs, 14 executed successfully and 18 conditionally skipped. Linux portable tests total 20,490 PASS /170 skip across the source job and five shards; the Portable report-merge job is an aggregate, not another test execution. The Linux/x64 installed-package verifier passed with REA MCP208 tools/6 prompts. The Windows addon cross-build ran on Linux; it does not establish Windows runtime verification.

The older macOS installed CLI/official Hermes-reader evidence above remains bound to 9468c1d, not a fresh full package/reader run on baea656. Full Hermes agent/model/stdio-client and performance remain NOT_RUN. The separate readiness workflow failed because all three human declarations are still unchecked. The current-head Codex bot published a review-usage-limit message; this supplies no new code finding and does not establish any older review-failure cause. External nonDraft state and human declarations remain untouched. This update neither closes the issue nor claims merge or human approval.

2026-10-23 actual-main integration

Delivered to my existing PR #5152, head c14611252786b4fa7a40b12eb45ce40db3c2819a, through a normal merge commit and fork push. Incorporated main 74ed67da7fe61e9d4ce7879c3abfb2422c420a64 introduced private copies for aliased parent tables. The combined shared editor prepares those parents first, then preserves consumers of the actual removed value/key. Main's missing-delete behavior and both complete regression groups are retained.

The final integrated source has 134 focused tests plus nine fresh README checks: 143 distinct PASS, zero skip. Check/docs/discovery, actual installed-package CLI/official REA MCP (220 tools, six prompts), explicit pack dry-run and independent frozen Standards/Spec reviews pass. The same feature package has 2,209 byte-matching files; twelve layouts exercise 60 actual installed CLI lifecycle calls with exact backups/stable repeats. The unchanged pinned official Hermes YAML reader and its actual pure fallback decode 36 snapshots 72 times, including aliased parents and external shared identities.

One extra V1 harness incorrectly required compact flow spacing to remain verbatim; an unchanged YAML-emitter control reproduced that normalization. Its raw failure is retained. V2 corrected only this oracle and passed, without product changes or counting the duplicate call. Full Hermes agent/model/stdio-client, external peer execution, Windows/Linux local acceptance and performance qualification remain NOT RUN. New-head upstream CI/Codex and human readiness are tracked separately; old-head CI does not qualify this integration. No issue closure or human attestation was performed.

2026-10-23 CI baseline failure follow-up

The same PR head's Codex code review completed with no findings. CI39883684324 attempt1 failed three retained-bundle projection interrupt cases in the existing commandFinalizationCancellation.test.ts; six jobs were cancelled and twenty conditionally skipped, so CI is not PASS. Both changed feature test files actually executed. An unmodified latest-main ed069bb9d40c3d7b4f97b87144dc1fa3d6833128 archive reproduces the exact same 3 FAIL / 17 PASS without this Hermes patch; relevant inputs and package-lock match the PR and CI base. Static inspection identifies the existing test spy's module boundary changed by main b7f8bbb49. Full failed run/job logs and both local outputs are retained. No workflow rerun, unrelated source/test patch, issue closure or human attestation was performed. This diagnostic run is separate from the 143 passing feature/README checks and does not establish full real-CLI cancellation behavior.

2026-10-23 cancellation-CI repair delivered

The three baseline cancellation failures are now repaired on existing PR #5152, normally committed and fork-pushed as d0f57143a9bd5fdd00f8e87565ffcb91124f569a (single parent c14611252786b4fa7a40b12eb45ce40db3c2819a). The actually incorporated main remains 74ed67da7fe61e9d4ce7879c3abfb2422c420a64.

A dynamic control confirms the old exported projection spy catches direct calls but misses the real same-module bundle workflow. The repaired test observes the actual retained-Evidence resolver, forwards its real result, and queues the existing interrupt after synchronous projection. A real non-aborted workflow supplies the complete partial-Evidence oracle. All twenty original scenarios and their typed errors, 130/143 exits, exact partial result, actual descriptor close, file inventory and listener-cleanup assertions remain. An isolated mutation disabling only this scheduling reproduces the same three failures; it is outside this PR.

Five fresh focused files pass 105 tests, including twenty cancellation cases and 23 compiled public-CLI cases; nine fresh README checks make 114 distinct PASS, zero skip. Full check/docs/discovery (2,106 files exactly once) pass. Both independent frozen Standards/Spec reviews pass. One complexity warning (21 against configured 20) is disclosed without suppressing it or weakening assertions. Only this test file changed; production, workflows, dependency inputs and all 2,209 packaged files are byte-identical. Earlier Hermes/package/client-reader evidence retains its original revision and execution scope rather than being counted again.

The new head's automatic CI is in progress; no new CI success, Codex approval or human readiness is inferred. No workflow/review rerun or issue-close call was made. Full bundle-phase real OS signal injection, Hermes agent/model/stdio-client, other host platforms and performance qualification remain NOT RUN.

2026-10-23 concrete Codex comment repair delivered

The cancellation repair's exact head d0f57143a9bd5fdd00f8e87565ffcb91124f569a passed codeCI39887282690:37jobs,17success/20conditionalSkip, source+eight shards aggregate27,416PASS/208skip. Its twenty repaired cancellation cases actually executed. The old failed attempt and single-disabled-scheduling negative control remain retained.

The next actual CodexP2 4355433149 exposed removed anchor-definition comments being discarded while preserving alias comments. Two real anchored compiled-CLI setup/uninstall calls reproduced wrong-success comment loss; two expanded controls kept the comment, and all exact backups survived. The owner assertion first failed1/41. The shared helper now combines definition and consumer comment fields, preserving their text and the single shared source copy. No parser, registration identity, transaction/backup ownership, cancellation implementation or execution authority changes.

This follow-up is normally committed and fork-pushed as 8c5edbff1de9b2d01db77e7d89dc26e79c5dbbae, single parentd0 above; incorporated main is still74ed. Local final coverage is seven distinct focused files157PASS plus9freshREADME=166PASS/0skip. The owner-only44 rerun after semantic test regrouping replaces its overlapping44, with the other six inputs113 unchanged; earlier114/143 and intermediate runs are not added. Complete check/docs/discovery2106once, actual installed package officialREA MCP220tools/6prompts with cleanup/lineage, explicit pack dry-run, independent frozen Standards/Spec reviews all pass. New dedicated tarball2209files match current bytes; four layouts20realinstalledCLI calls retain all comments exactly once, exact backups/stable repeats, and12snapshots24pinned official-reader/pure-fallback decodes preserve resolved values/shared identity. The first overlong-describe lintFAIL is retained; it was fixed by putting new comment cases in their own semantic group, without suppression/deleted assertions.

The previous d0 CI does not qualify this later comment-repair head. New-head automatic CI/Codex are tracked separately. FullHermesagent/model/stdio-client, external peer execution, other-host local qualification and performance remainNOT_RUN. All human/beforemerge declarations and externalnonDraft state are preserved; no close/ready/merge or manual review/workflow trigger was made.

2026-10-23 final comment-repair CI completed

Delivered-head CI completed successfully on 8c5edbff1de9b2d01db77e7d89dc26e79c5dbbae: 37 jobs, 17 successful and 20 conditionally skipped. Source plus all 8 shards report 27,418 PASS / 208 skip, with no failed tests. The Portable job is their aggregate, not an additional test execution. All three changed test files actually executed, including the repaired twenty-case cancellation file. Execution is limited to the recorded CI lanes; conditional platform/provider skips are not qualified as PASS. Separate human-readiness declarations remain unchecked. Codex state is assessed independently.

No issue close, workflow/review rerun, human attestation or new PR creation was performed. The earlier failed attempt and baseline/mutation RED remain historical evidence rather than being relabeled as successful.

2026-10-24 current delivery: PR#5152 now normally incorporates main f3269feaad5432a59363715cc3dc43c22c430573 at e09081066b3421f192d8e2156b3c16a139ee2206. Main7f707 independently supplies the complete plist fixture/provenance/malformed-byte tests; that full file is retained and our redundant XML fixture removed. No source-adoption credit or newroot/PR is claimed. One complete Hermes planner preserves key/liveidentity/comments plusmainfourcontrols; main actual cancellation seams and all20/fullpartialoracle remain.

Fresh actual integrated validation: 239distinctPASS/2existingWindows skips, check/docs/discovery2317once, installedpackage221tools6prompts/exactupdate/awaitcleanup, new2297-file identical tarball, 40actualinstalledCLI and24snapshots48fixedofficialHermesreader/purefallback reads, frozen independentStandards/SpecPASS. These are new executions on this main, not transferred oldcounts. Published source/history is clean and matches the current freeze. NewheadCI/Codex are independent; previous failed/cancelled attempts remain historical. All3explicitly human-confirmed author declarations and existing Before merge values are preserved. No GitHubmerge/close/ready/create/manualtrigger/resolve was performed. Fullclient/CLR/nativeengines/realapps/agent/model/externalpeer/fullotherhost/performance remainNOT_RUN beyond recorded bounded controls.

2026-10-24 test-only CI follow-up at 25a1930ff66c1526312c0f22e24bdd821e17acc9: adopted morluto's two maintained-main plist validation/conversion fixtures from dd198d037f, after reproducing the actual seven provenance failures. Final affected group 86PASS replaces overlapping56; distinct union 269PASS/2existingWindowsSkip/12files, not a fresh all-files run. Fresh check:fast2tasks0cache and frozen independent Standards/Spec PASS. All 2297 product bytes remain identical, so existing package/CLI/MCP/reader evidence is reused with zero new runtime calls. Actually included main remains f3269feaad, no later-main production integration or newroot/PR. Normal fork history and explicit human3checked are preserved; new-head codeCI/Codex remain independently tracked. Original failures and NOT_RUN boundaries stay recorded. No issueclose/reopen, GitHubmerge/close/ready/create/manualtrigger/resolve.

2026-10-24 CI follow-up at e92a3631f01b014d4d76fba754b3ae9e8852bfc2: retain the prior exact plist fixture correction and adopt morluto's canonical bound-target Apple dispatch owner/consumer controls from 41e10b240c. The actual Source failures reproduce 2FAIL/3PASS before correction. One fresh focused group plus fresh README gives 280PASS/2existingWindowsSkip/15files; no older overlap is added. Full check/docs/discovery/pack pass. Fresh current-source 2297-file package verifies 221tools/6prompts, exact update and awaited cleanup. Fresh feature runtime: 40 actual installed CLI lifecycle calls across eight YAML 1.1/1.2 layouts and 24 snapshots / 48 fixed official Hermes-reader and pure-fallback reads, with exact backups, stable repeats, shared identity and comments once. Two bounded real Mac MCP fault/recovery tests pass; this is not full native/client/other-host qualification. Independent Standards/Spec PASS, normal fork history, complete frozen source/package byte gates and human3checked are preserved. Actually integrated main remains f3269feaad; the Apple delta is a limited canonical port with morluto credit, not whole later-main integration or a newroot/PR. New-head CI/Codex remain independently tracked, historical failures/NOT_RUN boundaries retained. No issueclose/reopen, GitHubmerge/close/ready/create/manualtrigger/resolve.

2026-10-24 CI follow-up at 556850502e624d312838d089481de56f7252bd10: complete runs 40062065788 / 40062071496 expose two actual failure families. The Apple jobs each have one typed XML CLI provenance failure (307 passed / 5 skipped); shard 3 has three package-listing fixture failures. Aggregate failures and cancelled shards are reported separately.

The XML expectation now requires exactly file followed by successful plutil -lint, including its exact argv; binary still requires only file. All eighteen cases and typed values remain checked. The package fixture adds only the required synthetic CLI environment-owner member, preserving LF/CRLF success and literal-CR/bytecode refusal. Twelve isolated baseline/canonical mocked verifier controls establish that boundary; they are not physical package validation or additional test PASS. The own physical package based on f326 does not contain that later-main owner, and this correction does not claim whole-main integration.

The final two-file group freshly passes 21 tests, replacing overlapping intermediate runs; fresh check:fast passes two tasks with zero cache hits. Combined with unchanged prior focused/README evidence, the distinct total is 301 PASS / 2 existing Windows skips across 17 files, not one fresh all-files run. All 2297 archive/current/installed product bytes still match. Earlier current-owner verifier, feature CLI/MCP and reader evidence is reused; the eighteen compiled CLI and four mocked verifier calls are already inside the 21 tests.

Independent frozen Standards / Spec reviews pass. Normal hooks, pre-push and post-push byte gates match; the human declaration tail is unchanged. Actually incorporated main remains f3269feaad5432a59363715cc3dc43c22c430573, with the previously documented limited canonical Apple port. New-head CI and Codex remain separate pending checks. Historical failures, the initial 5478 unresolved cleanup boundary, and full client/native/other-host/performance NOT RUN remain recorded. No issue state, ready, merge, close, release or manual review/workflow trigger was changed.

2026-10-24 follow-up at 7cbc47dfa9d186fcc8305acd17dee6b323c09f2b: ordinary main integration b5c42dfc2a8eddeffb8d37c669178fa04169f050 resolves the two actual native-test conflicts and preserves Kaoru0822's #6945 canonical fixture fixes and authorship. The remaining Webpack input incorrectly redeclared its loader parameter; the mock is now supplied at Node-oracle factory entry. Every Node/static key/value and negative assertion remains; main's parameter-role guard is unchanged. Fresh shared-original public control on integrated5478 (1FAIL/36PASS) is retained;5152 has matching bytes and its own fresh corrected full group.

Fresh 20-file group 366PASS/2existing Windows skips plus README9 yields 375PASS/21distinct files. Full check/docs/discovery and real installed verifier 222tools/6prompts pass. All 2297 current/archive/installed product bytes match the new tarball; feature CLI/MCP/reader acceptance was freshly rerun on this source, not transferred from f326. Normal hooks/frozen independent Standards+Spec and complete byte gates pass; fork/upstream head/tree/parents and the explicitly confirmed human tail are exact. New-head CI/Codex remain separate gates. No new root/PR, issue state, ready, merge/close/release/manual trigger or duplicate reply/resolve. Historical failures, the initial5478 unresolved cleanup boundary and unverified full-client/provider/other-host/performance limits remain recorded.

2026-10-24 follow-up at 9ebfc7c2544db8a010c7de21e16974585445cc72: ordinary main merge d87e73f2db50be72d33a4b3c7199af35518b441c resolves the new actual Webpack-file conflict. Main's gensokyo-dev #6951 fixes the same invalid fixture by executing the exact registered bundle and passing the factory loader at its call boundary. Retain the complete canonical file and all original assertions; normally remove our redundant oracle implementation. #6945's canonical fixture history and Kaoru0822 credit remain. No own-source adoption credit, production-guard change or foreign runtime is inferred.

The changed file freshly passes37 on each worktree. It replaces the old37 within unchanged prior focused/README inputs: final 375PASS/21distinct files/2existing Windows skips, not a fresh whole-group rerun or37 extra. Fresh fullcheck passes. Docs/discovery/package/feature runtime reuse byte-identical tested inputs; all 2297 current/archive/installed product files and tarball are rechecked exact. The prior b5c installed verifier222tools6prompts and feature runtime were fresh, not old f326 transfer; no new dedicated runtime after this test-only merge. Independent frozen Standards+Spec, normal hooks and full byte gates pass before push. Fork/upstream head/tree/parents/body and explicitly confirmed human tail are exact. New-head CI/Codex remain separate. Historical failures, initial5478 cleanup UNKNOWN/retained workspace and full-client/other-host/performance limits remain. No issue state/ready/merge/close/release/create/manual trigger/replyPOST/resolve action.

Current-head code CI 40068924120 attempt1 completed SUCCESS for 9ebfc7c2544db8a010c7de21e16974585445cc72: 37 jobs, 18 success and 19 conditional skips. The complete final log and every executing job's first own checkout/parents were read. All current contribution test files actually executed; canonical Webpack, deferred launcher, package listing and Apple unit regressions were also observed in execution.

Source 17329PASS/13skip plus the recorded shards aggregate to Portable 31355PASS/232skip; Portable is a summary, not another execution. Platform skips, prior failed/cancelled attempts, local same-product verification, Codex/security/human review and merge remain separate. No old failure is erased, no test is skipped to pass, and the explicitly confirmed author declarations remain intact.

2026-10-25: PR #5152 is normally updated to 902fa53e27290f3941817d84e02efb62b2765008, incorporating main bb17e90f27dc8908c1c91c05055679678768c266 after a real cancellation-test conflict. Keep main #7022's prepared projection owner/shared budget and five Cutter controls, plus the independent complete reference Evidence, actual resolver/130143/primary/fd/files/listener assertions. No production cancellation/timeout/retry/skip or shared configuration-ownership change; original Hermes alias/binding/identity/comments remain.

Current integrated qualification:269distinct localPASS/12files/2existing Windows skips, with final25 replacing overlapping25 rather than a fresh whole-group rerun; fullcheck/docs/discovery2467once/pack pass. New actual installed verifier227tools/6prompts, exactupdate/verifiedlineage/awaitedcleanup; fresh2383matching productfiles,40installedCLI and24snapshots/48fixedofficialreader calls. Frozen independent Standards/Spec and full normal-hook byte gates pass. New-head CI/Codex tracked separately. Fullclient/agent/provider/otherhost/performance untested; no performance/source-adoption claim. Human declaration preserved, no newPR/ready/issueclose/reopen/replyPOST/resolve/manualtrigger.

<!-- gh-comment-id:6242509249 --> @xu91102 commented on GitHub (Oct 17, 2026): Independently reproduced on current main `7e4eed9dd48485b6a7100300aa98401811c2deb9` with the built public CLI (macOS arm64, Node 24.18.0). Four calls used separate isolated homes and an existing REA registration pointing to this checkout's actual Node/CLI paths: | Existing configuration | Call | Observed result | | --- | --- | --- | | `rea: &server`, followed by unrelated `other: *server` | approved setup, skill disabled | exit 1, `needs_human`, Hermes `failed` / `write` | | Equivalent expanded mappings | same setup | exit 0, `ready` | | Anchored REA entry and unrelated alias | uninstall | exit 1, `failed` | | Equivalent expanded mappings | uninstall | exit 0, `complete` | Both failing calls preserved the original file and created an exact backup. The successful controls preserved the original backup too. No Hermes agent/model was started, and no existing user configuration was used. I read the actual production diffs of #3785 and #1732 before selecting this root. #3785 materializes aliased **parent tables** and explicitly excludes this anchored-entry problem; #1732 retains entry fields and does not repair disappearing YAML anchor definitions. The current YAML writer replaces/deletes the selected node while another accepted configuration node still refers to that node's anchor. I am investigating preservation at that shared YAML editing boundary; no patch, upstream PR or CI result is being claimed yet. Update: the shared-writer fix is now committed and normally pushed to my fork as [79eb0d82b07ae2655bbf72a41c75cf7edece7aee](https://github.com/xu91102/rea/commit/79eb0d82b07ae2655bbf72a41c75cf7edece7aee), based on the reproduced main7e4eed9. Executed verification on macOS arm64 / Node24.18.0: - Same immutable registration bytes on baseline/fixed CLI: anchored setup and uninstall change from exit1 to0; expanded controls remain exit0. Failed baseline originals and exact backups survive. - Final coverage is four distinct focused files75PASS plus README5, total five files80PASS/0skip. - Full check/docs/test discovery passed (1564 files once); actual local package verification passed. A freshly packed and installed tarball completed six Hermes layouts and30 public CLI lifecycle calls, with healthy doctor, exact original backups, stable repeat setup/uninstall and nested comments retained. - The unmodified official Hermes hermes_yaml reader at e6cf2a9b1e8f98d40408b09a9a55993c8459b4b4 and its pure fallback decoded18 installed-package snapshots36 times, preserving unrelated values and input bytes (Python3.12.14, ruamel.yaml0.18.16/clib0.2.15). Update 2026-10-19: [upstream Draft PR #5152](https://github.com/morluto/rea/pull/5152) now exists at `30e8770c3810c7bb7ee3f7b3db5bb605f7377184`. The earlier no-upstream-PR statement above describes the original 7e fork preparation. This normal merge includes captured main `d3627b10382b0f28b12cad1543634e165470b29a` and its changed shared configuration consumers; the contribution remains five files against that main. ### Current review repair (2026-10-19) The issue-linked upstream PR is now #5152, final pushed source head `9468c1db7d50bfebfbb855f824596bd1c8411b6f`. Its actual integrated main is `d3627b10382b0f28b12cad1543634e165470b29a`; later-main full acceptance is not claimed. ### Current upstream verification (2026-10-20) Another actor normally merged main `bf1eeee94fd4677c793243a96542543b46c7c78e` into PR #5152, producing `baea65630bcccb0052fb380bee896576ff21e682`. The five contribution blobs and their patch relative to that integrated main match the previously reviewed `9468c1d` source. No local source synchronization or new push was needed for this external merge. [Exact-current-head CI](https://github.com/morluto/rea/actions/runs/39338438064) completed successfully: 32 jobs, 14 executed successfully and 18 conditionally skipped. The older macOS installed CLI/official Hermes-reader evidence above remains bound to `9468c1d`, not a fresh full package/reader run on `baea656`. ### 2026-10-23 actual-main integration Delivered to my existing PR [#5152](https://github.com/morluto/rea/pull/5152), head `c14611252786b4fa7a40b12eb45ce40db3c2819a`, through a normal merge commit and fork push. Incorporated main `74ed67da7fe61e9d4ce7879c3abfb2422c420a64` introduced private copies for aliased parent tables. ### 2026-10-23 CI baseline failure follow-up The same PR head's Codex code review completed with no findings. CI39883684324 attempt1 failed three retained-bundle projection interrupt cases in the existing `commandFinalizationCancellation.test.ts`; six jobs were cancelled and twenty conditionally skipped, so CI is not PASS. Both changed feature test files actually executed. An unmodified latest-main `ed069bb9d40c3d7b4f97b87144dc1fa3d6833128` archive reproduces the exact same 3 FAIL / 17 PASS without this Hermes patch; relevant inputs and package-lock match the PR and CI base. ### 2026-10-23 cancellation-CI repair delivered The three baseline cancellation failures are now repaired on existing PR [#5152](https://github.com/morluto/rea/pull/5152), normally committed and fork-pushed as `d0f57143a9bd5fdd00f8e87565ffcb91124f569a` (single parent `c14611252786b4fa7a40b12eb45ce40db3c2819a`). The actually incorporated main remains `74ed67da7fe61e9d4ce7879c3abfb2422c420a64`. ### 2026-10-23 concrete Codex comment repair delivered The cancellation repair's exact head `d0f57143a9bd5fdd00f8e87565ffcb91124f569a` passed [codeCI39887282690](https://github.com/morluto/rea/actions/runs/39887282690):37jobs,17success/20conditionalSkip, source+eight shards aggregate27,416PASS/208skip. Its twenty repaired cancellation cases actually executed. The old failed attempt and single-disabled-scheduling negative control remain retained. The next actual CodexP2 [4355433149](https://github.com/morluto/rea/pull/5152#discussion_r4355433149) exposed removed anchor-definition comments being discarded while preserving alias comments. This follow-up is normally committed and fork-pushed as `8c5edbff1de9b2d01db77e7d89dc26e79c5dbbae`, single parentd0 above; incorporated main is still74ed. ### 2026-10-23 final comment-repair CI completed [Delivered-head CI](https://github.com/morluto/rea/actions/runs/39889706608) completed successfully on `8c5edbff1de9b2d01db77e7d89dc26e79c5dbbae`: 37 jobs, 17 successful and 20 conditionally skipped. <!-- rea-20261024-5152-main-f326-delivered --> 2026-10-24 current delivery: PR#5152 now normally incorporates main `f3269feaad5432a59363715cc3dc43c22c430573` at `e09081066b3421f192d8e2156b3c16a139ee2206`. Main7f707 independently supplies the complete plist fixture/provenance/malformed-byte tests; that full file is retained and our redundant XML fixture removed. No source-adoption credit or newroot/PR is claimed. One complete Hermes planner preserves key/liveidentity/comments plusmainfourcontrols; main actual cancellation seams and all20/fullpartialoracle remain. Fresh actual integrated validation: 239distinctPASS/2existingWindows skips, check/docs/discovery2317once, installedpackage221tools6prompts/exactupdate/awaitcleanup, new2297-file identical tarball, 40actualinstalledCLI and24snapshots48fixedofficialHermesreader/purefallback reads, frozen independentStandards/SpecPASS. These are new executions on this main, not transferred oldcounts. Published source/history is clean and matches the current freeze. NewheadCI/Codex are independent; previous failed/cancelled attempts remain historical. All3explicitly human-confirmed author declarations and existing Before merge values are preserved. No GitHubmerge/close/ready/create/manualtrigger/resolve was performed. Fullclient/CLR/nativeengines/realapps/agent/model/externalpeer/fullotherhost/performance remainNOT_RUN beyond recorded bounded controls. <!-- rea-20261024-5152-plist-validation-delivered --> 2026-10-24 test-only CI follow-up at `25a1930ff66c1526312c0f22e24bdd821e17acc9`: adopted morluto's two maintained-main plist validation/conversion fixtures from dd198d037fcd8e2d313dff2147d7a80c436f3e5c, after reproducing the actual seven provenance failures. Final affected group 86PASS replaces overlapping56; distinct union 269PASS/2existingWindowsSkip/12files, not a fresh all-files run. Fresh check:fast2tasks0cache and frozen independent Standards/Spec PASS. All 2297 product bytes remain identical, so existing package/CLI/MCP/reader evidence is reused with zero new runtime calls. Actually included main remains f3269feaad5432a59363715cc3dc43c22c430573, no later-main production integration or newroot/PR. Normal fork history and explicit human3checked are preserved; new-head codeCI/Codex remain independently tracked. Original failures and NOT_RUN boundaries stay recorded. No issueclose/reopen, GitHubmerge/close/ready/create/manualtrigger/resolve. <!-- rea-20261024-5152-apple-bound-delivered --> 2026-10-24 CI follow-up at `e92a3631f01b014d4d76fba754b3ae9e8852bfc2`: retain the prior exact plist fixture correction and adopt morluto's canonical bound-target Apple dispatch owner/consumer controls from 41e10b240cec68308456056a2b4102b72199b227. The actual Source failures reproduce 2FAIL/3PASS before correction. One fresh focused group plus fresh README gives 280PASS/2existingWindowsSkip/15files; no older overlap is added. Full check/docs/discovery/pack pass. Fresh current-source 2297-file package verifies 221tools/6prompts, exact update and awaited cleanup. Fresh feature runtime: 40 actual installed CLI lifecycle calls across eight YAML 1.1/1.2 layouts and 24 snapshots / 48 fixed official Hermes-reader and pure-fallback reads, with exact backups, stable repeats, shared identity and comments once. Two bounded real Mac MCP fault/recovery tests pass; this is not full native/client/other-host qualification. Independent Standards/Spec PASS, normal fork history, complete frozen source/package byte gates and human3checked are preserved. Actually integrated main remains f3269feaad5432a59363715cc3dc43c22c430573; the Apple delta is a limited canonical port with morluto credit, not whole later-main integration or a newroot/PR. New-head CI/Codex remain independently tracked, historical failures/NOT_RUN boundaries retained. No issueclose/reopen, GitHubmerge/close/ready/create/manualtrigger/resolve. <!-- rea-20261024-5152-ci-fixtures-delivered --> 2026-10-24 CI follow-up at `556850502e624d312838d089481de56f7252bd10`: complete runs 40062065788 / 40062071496 expose two actual failure families. The Apple jobs each have one typed XML CLI provenance failure (307 passed / 5 skipped); shard 3 has three package-listing fixture failures. Aggregate failures and cancelled shards are reported separately. The XML expectation now requires exactly `file` followed by successful `plutil -lint`, including its exact argv; binary still requires only `file`. Actually incorporated main remains `f3269feaad5432a59363715cc3dc43c22c430573`, with the previously documented limited canonical Apple port. New-head CI and Codex remain separate pending checks. Historical failures, the initial 5478 unresolved cleanup boundary, and full client/native/other-host/performance NOT RUN remain recorded. No issue state, ready, merge, close, release or manual review/workflow trigger was changed. <!-- rea-20261024-5152-b5c-integrated-delivered --> 2026-10-24 follow-up at `7cbc47dfa9d186fcc8305acd17dee6b323c09f2b`: ordinary main integration `b5c42dfc2a8eddeffb8d37c669178fa04169f050` resolves the two actual native-test conflicts and preserves Kaoru0822's #6945 canonical fixture fixes and authorship. The remaining Webpack input incorrectly redeclared its loader parameter; the mock is now supplied at Node-oracle factory entry. Every Node/static key/value and negative assertion remains; main's parameter-role guard is unchanged. Fresh shared-original public control on integrated5478 (1FAIL/36PASS) is retained;5152 has matching bytes and its own fresh corrected full group. Fresh 20-file group 366PASS/2existing Windows skips plus README9 yields 375PASS/21distinct files. Full check/docs/discovery and real installed verifier 222tools/6prompts pass. All 2297 current/archive/installed product bytes match the new tarball; feature CLI/MCP/reader acceptance was freshly rerun on this source, not transferred from f326. Normal hooks/frozen independent Standards+Spec and complete byte gates pass; fork/upstream head/tree/parents and the explicitly confirmed human tail are exact. New-head CI/Codex remain separate gates. No new root/PR, issue state, ready, merge/close/release/manual trigger or duplicate reply/resolve. Historical failures, the initial5478 unresolved cleanup boundary and unverified full-client/provider/other-host/performance limits remain recorded. <!-- rea-20261024-5152-d87-canonical-delivered --> 2026-10-24 follow-up at `9ebfc7c2544db8a010c7de21e16974585445cc72`: ordinary main merge `d87e73f2db50be72d33a4b3c7199af35518b441c` resolves the new actual Webpack-file conflict. Checked the reported fix on main at d87e73f2db.

Before replacement/removal, external aliases bound to nodes inside the selected REA subtree are materialized from their original resolved values. A production-source probe refreshes the anchored REA fixture, confirms unrelated other retains old command/args, confirms new REA, and observes byte-identical second edit. Regression covers YAML 1.1/1.2 refresh/remove, anchored children and idempotency.

Implementation: HermesConfigurationYaml.ts, HermesConfigurationYaml.ts.

The relevant regression checks in HermesConfigurationYaml.test.ts passed in the focused test run on this revision. This closure is based on the current source and those checks; provider fixtures do not establish a real-engine run. Closing as completed on main.
