Before submitting

  • I searched the open and closed issues for a related report.
  • I removed credentials, tokens, private paths, and sensitive target data.

Area

Native analysis or decompilation

Observed behavior

rea cutter-command returns unreadable_output with details.operation: "cutter_command_status" when its authenticated pre-flight status reply lacks a completion watermark or contains the wrong session identity. The caller requested cutter_command. Public discovery successfully lists the session first, and the bridge receives no command frame in either failure case. This was observed against a simulated authenticated bridge on both tested builds. No real Cutter installation was used.

Reproduction

  1. For the source build, use the revision and pinned Node/npm versions listed below, run npm ci and npm run build:cached, then run the fixture from the checkout root. For the published package, run npm install --prefix release --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund rea-agents@6.5.0, change directory to release/node_modules/rea-agents, and run the same fixture. Both roots contain scripts/rea.mjs. The fixture creates a private bridge directory and descriptor, authenticates v2 request/response frames, and invokes the real CLI with a fresh HOME and whitelist environment for every child. It removes its temporary directories afterward. No target or Cutter process is needed.

NODE
  1. Observe the two missing-watermark and two invalid-identity results. Each exits 1 with reportedOperation: "cutter_command_status", although discovery returned sessions_found. The traces contain status requests only. The invalid-identity fixture changes its status identity after discovery; the missing-watermark fixture omits only the completion watermark throughout.
  2. Compare the two valid controls. Each exits 0 with operation: "cutter_command", complete execution, and the expected output. Its trace includes command dispatch and acknowledgement. Each build reproduced four faulty failures and passed two successful controls.

Expected behavior

A pre-flight failure for cutter_command should identify that caller operation while retaining the status-specific reason. The public contract and CLI canonical operation both use cutter_command, and this provider's adjacent pre-flight acknowledgement refusal already uses the caller's operation. The command must remain undispatched when status recovery cannot establish its required proof.

Impact and scope

The defect changes the machine-readable failure identity under bounded malformed-provider responses. No command was dispatched in either failing case, so these observations establish neither lost command output nor target mutation. Both malformed responses reproduced twice per build. Real Cutter occurrence frequency and downstream automation consequences remain unknown. Only CLI execution was tested.

  • Impact level: P2
  • Assessment status: supported
  • Impact basis: Public CLI failures identify an auxiliary operation instead of the caller's canonical operation in the structured error, which misattributes the failed request.
  • Workaround status: unverified
  • Workaround basis: Conforming-response controls avoid the trigger, but no practical workaround for a real bridge producing malformed replies was verified.

REA version

Current main source commit 360626434d21d19dc9402196630f48a249c25245, package version 6.5.0, built from locked dependencies; separately installed published npm package rea-agents@6.5.0. The npm registry and GitHub latest release both identify that package version as latest.

Runtime and platform

Node.js v24.18.0; macOS 27.0.1, Darwin arm64. The source build used repository-pinned npm 11.16.0 and Node. No real Cutter installation was used.

Target and artifact context

No binary or database is required. A local simulated Cutter bridge reports a partial document identity and generation 0, and returns fixture output in the successful control. The session identifiers and transport token in the fixture are synthetic.

Relevant output or evidence

  • Expected source: src/contracts/cutterToolContracts.ts:77; src/cli/cutterCommands.ts:125; src/cutter/CutterBridgeClient.ts:650; docs/reverse-engineering-tools.md:71.
  • Failure source: src/cutter/CutterBridgeClient.ts:593 and :599; the public CLI output below.
  • Evidence provenance: observed
  • Local verification: reproduced
  • Reproduction completeness: complete

Commands invoked by the fixture:

node scripts/rea.mjs list-cutter-sessions --json
node scripts/rea.mjs cutter-command 27d3e3f1-f1e5-49ae-91ec-95af1f343a5a 0 ij --json

Smallest meaningful output, identical across both repetitions per mode and both builds except accumulated call traces:

missing-watermark: discovery=sessions_found; exit=1; code=unreadable_output; details.operation=cutter_command_status; command frames=0
reason: The bridge did not provide authenticated proof that earlier connections reached a terminal state.
invalid-identity: discovery=sessions_found; exit=1; code=unreadable_output; details.operation=cutter_command_status; command frames=0
reason: The bridge status response did not contain a valid session identity.
valid: discovery=sessions_found; exit=0; operation=cutter_command; execution_state=complete; output=fixture output; command and acknowledgement observed

The public message gives generic unreadable-result guidance. The wrong name appears in details.operation; the status explanation appears in details.reason. Child stderr was empty. The fixture asserted response identities, codes, command absence and successful output, then closed each bridge and removed its directories.

Typed outcome or recovery expected

For the same malformed-status replies, return a failure identifying cutter_command, retain each status-specific reason, and continue sending no command frame. The valid control must continue returning complete command Evidence with the expected output and canonical operation. The fixture currently asserts the observed faulty identity; change that failure assertion to cutter_command when checking restoration.

Analysis or suspected cause

Source-derived reasoning: src/cutter/CutterBridgeClient.ts:427 invokes completion recovery before dispatch. Recovery creates an output error labeled with its internal status operation. CutterBridgeService.ts:245 preserves the existing typed error, and src/domain/analysisErrorProjection.ts:279 exposes its operation unchanged. No prior command or retained receipt is required to reach these cases. A mismatched identity on discovery itself would hide the session, which is why that fixture changes only the later reply.

Additional context

Related #4597 concerns JEB client-information metadata refusals after a successful primary call. Its mainline fixes modify the JEB provider. This report concerns Cutter's separate completion-recovery status check before command dispatch; the two paths can be corrected and verified independently. Live searches of open and closed issues and pull requests using Cutter command, status, operation, identity, attribution, cutter_command_status and completed_connection found no matching report. This simulation verifies REA's response to authenticated malformed replies and does not establish that a real Cutter bridge emits them. The MCP path was not exercised.

@morluto commented on GitHub (Oct 17, 2026):

Implemented in 5c0472c571, pushed to main.

Command-status parsing and selected-session validation now have one owner in CutterBridgeClient. Both preflight recovery and completion confirmation use its parsed facts. Failures identify cutter_command, retain their status-specific reasons, and add only details.diagnostics.auxiliary_operation: "status". Preflight still requires the authenticated completion watermark; confirmation can still accept an exact completed-command receipt without a watermark. No malformed proof dispatches a command. Typed confirmation failures remain typed.

Validation executed:

  • New public CLI controls first failed for missing watermark and mismatched identity, while the valid command control passed. The repaired build passes all three, including discovery, no command frames on failure, and command/acknowledgement frames on success.
  • 66 focused tests across eight files passed, covering the client, service, descriptor lifetime, capacity, MCP cancellation/cleanup recovery, public CLI, and three distinct completion-proof controls (invalid identity, exact receipt without watermark, unrelated receipt without watermark).
  • Typecheck/lint, docs checks, five documentation conformance controls, normal commit hooks and normal pre-push checks passed. Read-only source review found no blocker.
  • Existing authenticated frame and descriptor fixtures were extracted and reused by the new controls; the original fixture implementations were removed from the large client test file.

Bounded comparison: equivalent completed public CLI missing-watermark refusal through an authenticated loopback bridge, with no command dispatch. Baseline/candidate warm medians from two alternating repeats per build: elapsed 0.38881/0.38918 seconds, CPU 0.59185/0.59361 seconds, sampled peak process-family RSS 429,785,088/432,881,664 bytes, raw reply tokens 109/117 (cl100k_base). First processes recorded separately. No speed or memory improvement claimed. True cold, whole-agent, MCP/catalog/request/retry and native-engine costs remain unmeasured.

Scope: CLI refusal reproduction uses a simulated authenticated bridge. Existing MCP regressions passed; the new malformed-status cases were exercised through CLI and the production client seam, not MCP. No native Cutter engine or target was used, no native-provider support claim added, and heavy Qodo/profiler workloads were not restarted. Broader descriptor and cancellation boundary auditing continues separately.

Baseline/candidate warm medians from two alternating repeats per build: elapsed 0.38881/0.38918 seconds, CPU 0.59185/0.59361 seconds, sampled peak process-family RSS 429,785,088/432,881,664 bytes, raw reply tokens 109/117 (cl100k_base). First processes recorded separately. No speed or memory improvement claimed. True cold, whole-agent, MCP/catalog/request/retry and native-engine costs remain unmeasured. Scope: CLI refusal reproduction uses a simulated authenticated bridge. Existing MCP regressions passed; the new malformed-status cases were exercised through CLI and the production client seam, not MCP. No native Cutter engine or target was used, no native-provider support claim added, and heavy Qodo/profiler workloads were not restarted. Broader descriptor and cancellation boundary auditing continues separately.

Closing as addressed on main by 5c0472c57. Malformed Cutter preflight status proofs now identify cutter_command, retain the status-specific reason as an auxiliary diagnostic and continue to refuse command dispatch without valid proof. I verified the committed source and regression coverage; I have not rerun the runtime reproduction.
