Area

Setup, packaging, or upgrade

Observed behavior

On Debian and Ubuntu, approving Hopper setup in rea setup can also upgrade system packages that are already installed, such as python3 and the X11 libraries Hopper uses. Setup installs the Hopper package and its runtime dependencies in one apt-get install -y transaction, and apt upgrades every listed package that is already installed.

Reproduction

Source-derived at upstream/main 3ce311757, confirmed through the command builder in a test (no real Debian package database):

  1. On an apt system with python3 installed at an older version than the repository offers, run rea setup and approve Hopper.
  2. The planned and executed command is apt-get install -y <verified-hopper.deb> xvfb xauth python3 libx11-6 libxtst6.
  3. apt upgrades python3 and any other listed package that has a newer candidate.

Expected behavior

Missing runtime dependencies are installed; dependencies that are already installed keep their versions. Only the Hopper package itself may change version.

Impact and scope

Debian and Ubuntu hosts. AGENTS.md says installers must not install or upgrade unrelated software.

REA version

6.7.0, revision 3ce311757
