Observed behavior

Source-only (not executed as a rendered site): reading the documentation home page's “Choose a guide” table shows the native-inspection task twice. One copy includes the Linux kernel-module guide and the other omits it. An independent source check found 12 body rows for 11 different task labels in both attempts.

Reproduction

  1. From the repository root at the stated baseline, run the following command. It copies the document into a fresh empty directory, redirects HOME there, checks that copy twice, and removes its temporary files automatically.
python3 -I - <<'PY'
from pathlib import Path
from collections import Counter
import tempfile, os
source = Path('docs/index.md').read_text()
with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory(prefix='probe.') as work:
    root = Path(work)
    (root / 'home').mkdir()
    (root / 'index.md').write_text(source)
    os.environ['HOME'] = str(root / 'home')
    os.chdir(root)
    for attempt in (1, 2):
        rows = [(n, line.split('|')[1].strip(), line) for n, line in enumerate(Path('index.md').read_text().splitlines(), 1) if line.startswith('| ') and line.split('|')[1].strip() not in ('Task', '---------------------------------------------------')]
        counts = Counter(task for _, task, _ in rows)
        print(f'attempt {attempt}: body_rows={len(rows)}, distinct_tasks={len(counts)}')
        for n, task, line in rows:
            if counts[task] > 1:
                print(f'line={n}; task={task}; kernel_guide={"kernel-modules.md" in line}')
    os.chdir('/')
PY
  1. Observe the following output. The duplicate was present in both checks (2 attempts, 2 findings).
attempt 1: body_rows=12, distinct_tasks=11
line=53; task=Inspect native functions, references, or types; kernel_guide=True
line=54; task=Inspect native functions, references, or types; kernel_guide=False
attempt 2: body_rows=12, distinct_tasks=11
line=53; task=Inspect native functions, references, or types; kernel_guide=True
line=54; task=Inspect native functions, references, or types; kernel_guide=False

Expected behavior

The “Choose a guide” table should contain one native-inspection task row with the complete guide list, including Linux kernel modules. This expectation follows the task-to-guides structure and the known-good source immediately before the kernel-module feature merge, which contains only one occurrence of that task label. It is an editorial expectation, not an explicit documented uniqueness rule. CONTRIBUTING.md under “Reporting issues” states: “Ground expected behavior in documentation, source, or a known-good version when available.”

Impact and scope

The checked source presents redundant navigation and inconsistent guide lists for the same task. The kernel-module link remains available in the first row; no lost functionality or runtime failure was observed. The finding appeared in both source checks at the stated revision. Rendered-site behavior, deployed content, and effects on readers were not tested.

REA version

6.8.0 (source commit a905a71e31)

Runtime and platform

Node 24.22.1; macOS 27.0.1 arm64; source check used Python 3.

Relevant output or evidence

Observed source inspection: docs/index.md:48 introduces the guide table, and docs/index.md:53 and docs/index.md:54 repeat the same task label. The former links kernel-modules.md and the latter does not. The command above produced the exact six output lines shown; it reads the source copy without running a documentation build or REA analysis command.

Static history check: git show dba8a3197^:docs/index.md | rg -c 'Inspect native functions, references, or types' returned 1; replacing the revision with dba8a3197 returned 2. The feature merge is an ancestor of the tested baseline. package.json:271 selects the docs directory for the documentation build, and docs/index.md:2 declares the home layout.

Analysis or suspected cause

Source-derived: merge dba8a31978 adds the native-inspection row containing the kernel-module link while retaining the previous row. The redundant older row remains in docs/index.md:54 at the tested baseline.

Additional context

Open issue #7324 concerns a different error: the kernel-module guide's trailer-magic byte count. Its correction would not remove the duplicated index row. Open documentation organization issue #2401 and navigation PRs #4108, #2791, and #5197 cover other changes and do not report this duplication. The npm registry reports 6.8.0 as the latest published rea-agents release, matching the tested source package version.
