Before submitting

  • I searched the open and closed issues and pull requests for a related proposal.
  • I removed credentials, tokens, private paths, and sensitive target data.

Area

Setup, packaging, or upgrade

Current limitation

Installation process currently requires a package manager, making it unsuitable for archival copies and installation in air-gapped systems without extensive and delicate preparation that's easy to fail.

The install script approach is invalid too since it pulls from the internet, it is, philosophically, a package manager too.

Use cases

archival copies and installation in air-gapped systems

Tools like these are likely to get struck down, generally it's a good idea to make them easy to save in a format that can be kept in cold storage and does not require any internet connectivity to install in full.

Desired outcome and success criteria

A way to install this without a package manager.

Distribution & Packaging Review

Supporting package-manager-free / portable releases enables installation on air-gapped security audit workstations:

  • Packaging Strategy: Standalone executable bundles generated via Node.js Single Executable Application (SEA) or standalone tarballs with vendored production node_modules (avoiding global npm / npx dependencies).
  • Setup Invariant: Ensure the standalone binary can run rea doctor and initialize local configuration without requiring internet access or ambient package managers.
