📄 Description

Summary

Fixes #3355. Respect the final effective child-process stdio property and preserve explicit uncertainty for unproved options and call layouts.

Prepared with assistance from OpenAI Codex.

Problem and expected behavior

In spawn("x", [], {stdio:"pipe", stdio:"inherit"}), the final property must win. Known non-overriding keys and spreads, including [+1], ...{} and unrelated copied methods, must preserve the effective value; unresolved writes must retain dynamic/candidate stdio.

Named argv/callback overloads require a stable local identity. In non-strict CommonJS, var argv=[]; {function argv(){}} can replace the outer array with a callback, so its stale initializer cannot prove the options slot. Value TypeScript module markers permit isolated local proofs, while erased syntax and unproved contexts must retain uncertainty.

Change and scope

Read object properties in reverse source order through one shared domain helper used by child-process, Electron, RPC and GraphQL readers. Inline object-literal spreads use the same effective lookup, bounded by the existing 256-level expression limit, including transparent spread wrappers. A missing inline property leaves the outer value intact; an effective explicit property wins. Inline getters retain side-effect uncertainty because copying can execute them and change another source key. Ordinary methods and setter-only members on unrelated keys are copied without invocation; requested-key methods/accessors remain unknown. Named/unknown spreads and unresolved computed keys stay conservative. Literal propertyless primitives and proved child nullish spreads are no-ops. Unary plus is recognized only on a numeric literal under existing transparent wrappers. Void keys remain exact without suppressing operand effects.

Select overloads using bounded array/callback identity from a single stable initializer chain and reuse collected lexical references. Parser-owned module/CommonJS facts, definite initialization, five wrapper-name exclusions, and eval/erased/transformed-scope guards govern proofs. Non-module block-function names conservatively block same-named var proofs. No named-object recovery, cross-statement evaluation or general interpreter is added.

Follow the contribution scope.
Unresolved scope, authority, side effects, or required verification block
integration. Link the required maintainer scope decision for new providers or
capabilities involving target execution, injection, mutation, or protection
recovery; ordinary fixes within existing boundaries may state "not applicable".
Draft PRs may leave the scope decision pending and the readiness and merge checklists
unchecked. Maintainers can help resolve open questions.

Contract and boundary impact

  • Semantic owner and earliest changed stage: Domain effective-property and child-argument identity readers; parser owns module/CommonJS/unknown context facts; graph projection retains unresolved stdio.
  • Contribution scope fit and linked maintainer decision: Existing static-analysis boundary; separate maintainer decision not applicable.
  • CLI and MCP/tool-catalog contract: Public schemas/catalog and internal worker IR remain unchanged. Unproved stdio retains candidate relations and unknown-value evidence.
  • Provider, bridge, target-format, or platform compatibility: JavaScript/TypeScript static analysis; verified macOS arm64 source checkout.
  • Evidence, artifact, provenance, or reconstruction contract: Retain child/source identities, complete Evidence, candidate/unknown endpoints and failed attempts.
  • Target selection, authority, upstream behavior, and cleanup details (if applicable): Analyze selected fixtures as inert text; verification starts REA and self-owned Node controls. The MCP server's exit was observed after close.
  • Generated metadata (docs/public/product-catalog.json), package, or installation impact (CI generates and validates ignored catalogs and skills/; edit authored instructions in .agents/skills/reverse-engineer-anything/ and never commit build outputs): No dependency, lockfile, package, release or committed generated-output change.

Expected effects (check known effects; use documentation-only on its own).
Unchecked items do not establish absence; leave uncertainties visible.

  • Read existing files or captured data.
  • Launch or attach to a process.
  • Inject instrumentation or run scripts/code.
  • Change process memory, registers, files, or configuration.
  • Contact network services.
  • Recover protected code or work around protections.
  • Documentation or usability only; no target interaction.
  • Not sure yet; investigation or maintainer guidance needed.

Evidence and regression coverage

  • Tests added or updated: Both public adapters exercise effective properties, overloads, source ranges, env/argv facts, candidate/unknown stdio and graph endpoints. Focused tests cover shared RPC lookup, ordinary copied methods versus getter mutations, requested-key accessor/computed-key guards, the inline-spread depth boundary, narrow unary-plus numeric keys, parser contexts, stable initializers and reference reuse.
  • Base reproduction or other evidence: Node controls confirm an ordinary helper method is copied with zero invocations, while a getter executes once and can mutate the source stdio to pipe. Before the getter-only distinction, source-owner/shared-RPC regressions and both compiled adapters incorrectly reported the unrelated ordinary method as unknown; those regressions now pass.
  • User-visible CLI/MCP output (if applicable): An eight-case final-commit control reports inherit/resolved for nested ordinary methods and an unrelated setter-only member. A mutating getter, requested-key method/setter, unknown computed method key, nested unknown spread and the unchanged string-spread control stay dynamic/candidate with unknown-value evidence. Complete normalized CLI/MCP results match; graph endpoints, MCP ping and owned-server exit checks pass.
  • Remaining proof gaps: Inline lookup stops at its depth limit and does not follow named objects. String spreads and other primitive expressions remain conservative. Block-function names are conservative across the source; full Annex B strictness/copy eligibility is not modeled. Named nullish values, wrapper parameters and unproved initialization stay unknown. Ordinary .js/.ts sources whose sole module marker is import.meta retain unknown context. Alias, effect and array-content/count precision remains bounded; static facts do not prove runtime calls, completion or OS connections.

For evidence-bearing changes:

  • Observed, derived, and inferred claims remain distinguishable.
  • Artifact identity, source provenance, and failed attempts remain preserved.
  • Unsupported, incomplete, unavailable, or uncertain outcomes remain visible.

Validation performed

Verified commit: c035bcc0c06f8cdeccfd21d62a8aba2c1cb90353, macOS arm64, Node 24.18.0/npm 11.16.0 and locked dependencies.

  • npm run check — passed, including typecheck, lint, format, knip, metadata, module boundaries and architecture guards.
  • vitest run src/domain/javascript/ src/application/javascript/ src/javascript/analysis/ tests/boundary/filesystem/referenceSourceShadowedRequire.test.ts — 95 files, 2,325 tests passed.
  • npm run test:focused -- tests/acceptance/applications/javascriptChildProcessStdioCli.test.ts tests/acceptance/applications/javascriptChildProcessArgumentsCli.test.ts tests/acceptance/applications/javascriptWindowOptionsCli.test.ts — 3 files, 5 tests passed.
  • npm run docs:check — passed, including 5 README consistency tests. node scripts/verify-test-discovery.mjs discovered all 1,418 test files exactly once.
  • Compiled CLI and real stdio MCP — the eight-case output, complete normalized-result parity, graph, ping and cleanup checks passed.
  • Independent source review of this commit — no blockers. Nine independent method/getter, requested-key, computed/nested and property-precedence probes passed.
  • npm test — not run; full-suite coverage remains incomplete.

GitHub CI and remote bot reviews have not established a pass for this commit. Full-suite, installed-package and external-provider verification remain unconfirmed.

Compatibility, safety, and release

  • Breaking changes or migration steps: No public schema migration. Unproved stdio is represented by candidate relations and explicit unknowns.
  • Real Hopper/Ghidra, browser, or OS coverage: macOS arm64 source-checkout CLI/stdio MCP and a self-owned Node control only. Linux/Windows, installed package, actual Electron/browsers, external engines and third-party clients are unverified on this commit.
  • Package or release metadata impact: None.
  • Security, privacy, process, or containment review: Static source analysis adds no execution/mutation/network authority. Performance was not benchmarked.
