📄 Description

Summary

Records a real Windows x64 Ghidra run in which a 37,611,928-byte MSVC/Qt PE
exceeded the default 330-second startup budget, and exceeded an 1,800-second
budget as well, while a 360,448-byte system executable finished the same
operation in 231 seconds. The document previously stated only that
"resource-reference analysis and default-configuration completion are not
established by these results." That remains true; this change makes the size
boundary concrete and records which preset let auto-analysis finish.

Problem and expected behavior

An analyst following windows-ghidra-p0.md
on a large target has no recorded observation of how the default analyzer
preset behaves above a few hundred kilobytes, and no statement that
REA_GHIDRA_DISABLED_ANALYZERS=WindowsResourceReference can be what allows
completion. The smallest trigger here is rea analyze <37.6 MB PE> --provider ghidra
with the default settings.

Change and scope

Documentation only: one table of four observed startup outcomes, the target
SHA-256 and the resulting procedure/segment counts, the observed cold-session
cost of search_strings on that session, and a note that the recorded timeout
message came from the released 6.5.0 package whose generic text does not name
REA_GHIDRA_STARTUP_TIMEOUT_MS (the setting is named from a later commit).

Intentionally not included: no analyzer-preset change, no default-budget
change, no new provider capability.

Contract and boundary impact

  • Semantic owner and earliest changed stage: documentation under docs/; no code path changes.
  • Contribution scope fit and linked maintainer decision: documentation-only change within an existing boundary; not applicable.
  • CLI and MCP/tool-catalog contract: none.
  • Provider, bridge, target-format, or platform compatibility: describes observed Windows x64 + Ghidra 12.1.4 behavior; no compatibility claim is added.
  • Evidence, artifact, provenance, or reconstruction contract: none.
  • Target selection, authority, upstream behavior, and cleanup details (if applicable): the recorded run used the read-only Windows Ghidra P0 boundary; the ephemeral session reported complete cleanup.
  • Generated metadata (docs/public/product-catalog.json), package, or installation impact: none; no generated file is touched.

Expected effects (check known effects; use documentation-only on its own).

  • Read existing files or captured data.
  • Launch or attach to a process.
  • Inject instrumentation or run scripts/code.
  • Change process memory, registers, files, or configuration.
  • Contact network services.
  • Recover protected code or work around protections.
  • Documentation or usability only; no target interaction.
  • Not sure yet; investigation or maintainer guidance needed.

(Two boxes are checked because the recorded run did write Ghidra session
configuration and temporary files on the analysis host; this PR itself changes
only a Markdown file.)

Evidence and regression coverage

  • Tests added or updated: none. No test anchors the edited prose (checked with a
repository search for the prior sentence).
  • Base reproduction or other evidence: the timeout and success envelopes are
REA CLI JSON captures keyed to the target SHA-256 shown in the diff.
  • User-visible CLI/MCP output (if applicable): provider_timeout with
    details.timeout_ms: 1800000 and details.diagnostics.failure_message: "Ghidra startup deadline elapsed";
the completing run returns binary_overview with procedure_count: 79464.
  • Remaining proof gaps: one host, one target, individual observations only;
the string-search durations are upper bounds from requests that were stopped,
    not completed measurements.

For evidence-bearing changes:

  • Observed, derived, and inferred claims remain distinguishable.
  • Artifact identity, source provenance, and failed attempts remain preserved.
  • Unsupported, incomplete, unavailable, or uncertain outcomes remain visible.

Validation performed

  • npm run docs:check — passed: 6/6 tasks successful, tests/conformance/readmeConsistency.test.ts 5/5 tests.
  • git diff — 34 insertions, 1 deletion in docs/windows-ghidra-p0.md.

Compatibility, safety, and release

  • Breaking changes or migration steps: none.
  • Real Hopper/Ghidra, browser, or OS coverage: Windows 11 x64, 20 logical CPUs, Ghidra 12.1.4, JDK 21.0.12.1, rea-agents 6.5.0.
  • Package or release metadata impact: none.
  • Security, privacy, process, or containment review: no secrets, no personal paths in the added text; the target is an unmodified installed application.

Author readiness

Human owner:

  • I reviewed the final diff and relevant existing code, understand the change and its edge cases, and take responsibility for the complete PR, including AI-assisted work.
  • I checked the evidence above, confirmed it supports the current change, and recorded meaningful validation gaps.
  • I declare this PR ready for initial maintainer review.

Before merge

  • This PR addresses a concrete problem or an agreed enhancement.
  • Material scope and authority questions are resolved, and any required maintainer scope decision covers the final diff.
  • The PR has one focused outcome and the title follows type(scope): outcome.
  • Related issue is linked, or the reason for not linking one is stated above.
  • Tests cover changed observable behavior and meaningful failure paths.
  • Owning docs, contracts, and generated metadata are updated where needed.
  • User-visible CLI/MCP changes include representative output.
  • I checked the final diff for secrets, unrelated cleanup, and unsupported claims.
