📄 Description

Summary

A list view serves either every entity of the collection (membership: "all") or only the entities each recording listed (recorded). It was all only when every checked line of the tool listed the whole collection. One filtered line (?library_id=…, ?name=…) therefore kept all of the tool's lines to their recorded members. An entity a task loaded with data/add, or a served write created, then never appeared in that tool's lists, even on the unfiltered line where the application had shown it lists everything.

This PR decides that per line. It also stops a whole list from confirming a create whose entity a read has already shown gone.

Part of #4933. Stacked on #5600, merged in at dc5e2aad; until #5600 lands, the diff against main includes it. The new work is:

  • environmentStateGate.ts, environmentStateRules.ts, environmentStateView.ts: per-line membership and the counter names;
  • environmentStateWriteChecks.ts, EnvironmentStateWriteSimulation.ts: per-line checks and insert retries, and dropping a write from its collection on an observed absence;
  • environmentStateAnswer.ts: per-line serving;
  • tests, docs and docs/specs/agent-environments/list-lines/.

Problem and expected behavior

  • Per-line membership. A recorded-membership list view now names, in all_record_ordinals, each checked line that meets the conditions all asks of every line:
    • no query, or paging parameters only;
    • exactly the entities of its collection, in state order;
    • no total that differs from the number listed, and no next page.
  • What a whole line does. A call answered on such a line lists every entity of the collection. The write gate checks a read on it against the whole collection, and a create's insert rule may be retried on it, as for an all view. An argument-less call may answer on any whole line. Other lines keep their recorded members.
  • Unchanged views. When every line is whole, or none is, the view is unchanged and the member is absent.
  • Counters. numberOfElements and similar number-of-items names count the listed entities, so Komga-style envelopes follow the state.
  • Absences. When a read shows an entity absent (for example a 404 after an unmodelled delete), the entity leaves every write's claim on its collection. A whole list taken afterwards no longer confirms a create it cannot show. This is the same rule #5600 applies when a modelled delete replaces a create.

Change and scope

  • Self-contained: the state view's list plans, the write gate's list checks and serving's list answers.
  • Not included:
    • lists with sort or filter parameters: their order and selection are not modelled;
    • Komga's collection create, which #5600's newest head leaves unconfirmed in the republished capture.
  • Scope: analysis of existing Evidence, inside the existing boundary; no target execution.

Contract and boundary impact

  • Semantic owner and earliest changed stage: the environment-state analysis view (src/domain/analysisView/), then serving (src/application/environment/).
  • Contribution scope fit and linked maintainer decision: refines the list plan and the write gate's attribution; not applicable.
  • CLI and MCP/tool-catalog contract: none; the inspect_analysis_view output gains an optional all_record_ordinals on list views.
  • Provider, bridge, target-format, or platform compatibility: none.
  • Evidence, artifact, provenance, or reconstruction contract: a state without mixed lines keeps its exact view values. A state with them, or with a numberOfElements counter, changes and so gets a new Evidence id. A state supplied to environment-serve keeps loading, since the member is optional.
  • Target selection, authority, upstream behavior, and cleanup details (if applicable): not applicable.
  • Generated metadata (docs/public/product-catalog.json), package, or installation impact: none.

Expected effects (check known effects; use documentation-only on its own).
Unchecked items do not establish absence; leave uncertainties visible.

  • Read existing files or captured data.
  • Launch or attach to a process.
  • Inject instrumentation or run scripts/code.
  • Change process memory, registers, files, or configuration.
  • Contact network services.
  • Recover protected code or work around protections.
  • Documentation or usability only; no target interaction.
  • Not sure yet; investigation or maintainer guidance needed.

Evidence and regression coverage

Tests added.

  • Domain (environmentStateWrites, 3):
    • a tool with a whole line and a filtered line names the whole one, counts numberOfElements and totalElements, and a create the whole line lists is confirmed;
    • a whole list taken after a read showed the created entity gone confirms no create (fails without the absence rule);
    • a tool whose lines are all whole, or none, names none.
  • Serving (environmentStateWriteAnswer, 1): after a served create, the whole line lists the created book with its counters, and the filtered line keeps its recorded member.

Executed evidence.

  • Fifty published captures, state view with and without the change:
    • 47 list views in 20 environments gain a whole line (Komga, BookStack, Mealie, WordPress, Vikunja, Paperless and others). Calls on those lines now list the state, including what data/add loads and served writes change. Three of them back a type with a served write (Airbyte tags, BookStack books, Linkding tags).
    • Served writes stay at 31. Airbyte's tag delete is now served: a list after the delete shows the tag gone. Sentry's release create in the pool's earlier manifest is now unconfirmed: its only confirmation was a list taken after the release was deleted and shown gone.
    • No other view or plan changed. The six environments republished with newer manifests keep every write verdict.
  • Six environments against their live applications (environment-compare, probes from #5699 plus held-out sessions):
    • NetBox 98.5%, Komga 91.5%, Mealie 94.0%, n8n 71.6%, Shlink 87.1% and Sentry 24.5%, before and after. No step changed.
    • Komga is the environment whose lists gain whole lines, but with #5600's newest head its collection create is unconfirmed, so nothing is created for a list to show. On the previous #5600 head the same comparison moved Komga from 94.7% to 95.2%.

Details are in docs/specs/agent-environments/list-lines/verification.md.

Remaining proof gaps:

  • The live comparison shows no change at #5600's current head; the benefit is shown by the census and the tests, not by a probe.
  • A whole line must list the collection in state order; a line sorted another way stays recorded.

For evidence-bearing changes:

  • Observed, derived, and inferred claims remain distinguishable.
  • Artifact identity, source provenance, and failed attempts remain preserved.
  • Unsupported, incomplete, unavailable, or uncertain outcomes remain visible.

Validation performed

Run on macOS with Node v22.23.1 at 40800631 (the last code change; the next commit is the verification record).

  • npm run build:cached, npm run check:fast (typecheck and lint), npm run format:check, npx knip, npm run scan:todos, npm run docs:check, npm run verify:test-discovery and npm run mcp-catalog:check: passed.
  • npm run jscpd: 3.45% duplicated lines over 3646 files, under the 3.5% gate.
  • npx vitest run --project domain --project services: 7616 passed, 5 pre-existing skips.
  • npm run test:prepare, then npm run test:focused -- the environment serve and export CLI boundaries, the serve and served-writes MCP boundaries, the analysis-view CLI and MCP boundaries, the compact input schema boundary and tool schema validity: 8 files, 78 passed.
  • Review round (head 7ffd0772):
    • Merged #5600 at 73c0e9b5 and 6d28aa78, and main at 4dfa1c67. The contract description conflicted only where main added its Rust and GPU entries.
    • Six of Greptile's eight findings were in #5600's code and were fixed there in 9f513d07:
      • the gate chooses a read's line as serving does;
      • a read made while a write was still running checks nothing;
      • a later call that contradicts the plan refuses it;
      • a collection the capture listed empty keeps its spelling;
      • wide arrays no longer overflow the stack;
      • the guide counts the served write tools.
    • This branch fixed the other two in 7ffd0772:
      • list counters come from whole lines and update per line, so a partial page no longer drops a whole line's total;
      • a failed item check that takes an answer with no entity drops that entity's collection claims.
    • Each new test fails on the previous head.
    • Gates passed: check:fast, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog, with no oxlint warnings. Domain and services 7717 (5 pre-existing skips); boundaries 83; conformance 279; jscpd 3.43%.
    • Over the 50 captures, the merges changed nothing. The two fixes add total to BookStack's pages and count to Linkding's tags, and served write tools stay at 31. The six environments compare exactly as before.
    • This section's earlier text had captured command output in place of the command names; it is restored from the verification record.
  • Review round 2 (head de13b0c5): merged #5600 at 43d98ea9 in 3e18322e. Its fixes settle the four findings Greptile raised here against that branch's code: a create answering with its id alone, a later call that first sends the identity member, wide bodies, and the memory of fixed values. The list page cap now applies on every line that lists its whole collection. Over the 50 captures no view or write plan changed and served write tools stay at 31; the six environments compare exactly as before.
  • Review round 3 (head 9b868c07):
    • Merged #5600 at 264ce410, 0ae64400, 6257de93, 466ed8b4, 7cef2fb2, 45a5c8b9 and 325c128f (2807278f, 34cbdd65, 4f40bff4, f239fa30, 8eea9f6d, 27dd6062, 9b868c07). Their fixes settle the seven findings Greptile raised here against that branch's code: a _start–_end range escaping the page cap, fields an update removed, entities named by a double decode, later creates' generated formats, an initial state too large to load back, zero page sizes erasing positive bounds, and interference timed by a tool's call on another collection.
    • The page cap here now uses that branch's pageBound, and #retryInsert reads its line's collection directly to stay under the line limit.
    • Gates passed on 9b868c07: check:fast, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog, with no oxlint warnings in the changed files; domain and services 7754 (5 pre-existing skips); environment boundaries 63; conformance 265; jscpd 3.43%.
    • Over the 50 captures no view or write plan changed and served write tools stay at 31; the six environments compare exactly as before.
  • Review round 4 (head 20135117): #5600 was restacked onto main, so 891f35e7 merges its 717ac2c4 with 325c128f, the commit last merged here, as the base. This branch's own changes carry over line for line. Merged main 2451e187 in 20135117.
    • Gates passed: check:fast, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog; domain and services 7835 (5 pre-existing skips); environment boundaries 63; jscpd 3.47%.
    • Over the 50 captures, no view or write plan changed against 9b868c07, and served write tools stay at 31.
    • The held-out comparison was not rerun. It needs #5699's compare command, and #5699 and this branch now conflict in environmentStateAnswer.ts, environmentStateGate.ts, environmentStateWriteChecks.ts and two docs tables.
  • Review round 5 (head 79f0560e): Greptile's two findings here, a failed read rejecting valid writes and changing fields confirming unproved writes, were in #5600's code. Both are fixed there in ccdf091a and merged here with #5600 at 3f1f825e.
    • 0fe17380 moves writtenFieldChecks into the attribution module, keeping the checks under the line limit.
    • Gates passed: check:fast, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog; domain and services 7886 (5 pre-existing skips); environment boundaries 64; jscpd 3.41%. On an earlier run of this round, two heavy domain tests (the keyed-archive traversal and the 125,000-dependent graph) timed out under load; they passed when rerun and on the final run.
    • Over the 50 captures no view or write plan changed against round 4, and served write tools stay at 31.
  • Restacked onto main after #5600 landed (head 0499ed1b): merged main up to b8c1b453, then #5600's squash 538017d1 with 3f1f825e as the base. The branch gained only #5600's final commit, which bounds the served clock. Its diff against main is now its own work. Gates passed: domain and services 7899 (5 pre-existing skips) and environment boundaries 65.

Compatibility, safety, and release

  • Breaking changes or migration steps: none. List views gain an optional member, and existing states load unchanged.
  • Real Hopper/Ghidra, browser, or OS coverage: not applicable.
  • Package or release metadata impact: none.
  • Security, privacy, process, or containment review: no new inputs; reads retained Evidence only.

Maintainer integration — 2026-10-22 (36571c494)

  • Preserved contributor history and merged current main 3a42a9e35, retaining its shared path decoder. No CI configuration changes and no Co-authored-by trailer.
  • Fixed whole-line admission at the paging owner: empty later/ambiguous pages cannot expose earlier entities after data/add. Positions must establish zero; page numbering not observed as zero-/one-based remains unknown. A valid mixed-line regression fails before the fix (new earlier entity returned for offset=2) and passes afterwards; aliases, malformed and repeated positions are covered.
  • Executed: 543 unique focused/adjacent domain/service/public CLI/MCP tests, plus three repeated 39-test stability runs; complete npm run check; npm run docs:check including 9 README tests; pre-push check:fast.
  • Real read-only GitHub API capture: 44 repository labels plus a one-item page, HAR SHA-256 62db6a3c0f0cd6be433f358fd5c3e13eaa058059a5b669bf557490527c3e23cf. Both CLI/MCP views agree exactly. Public environment serving returns all 45 local-state labels after adding a synthetic local-only label, keeps the one-item page unchanged, preserves the new entity’s empty record citations, and resets exactly. Baseline main incorrectly leaves the whole line at 44. No GitHub writes or live application-write fidelity claim.
  • Whole verification task: main 20.46 s wall / 28.73 s CPU / 505.76 MiB sampled process-family RSS; candidate 18.09 s / 25.89 s / 490.87 MiB. Catalog unchanged at 935 bytes; reply grows 12,570→12,869 bytes to include the missing fact. Sampling is 500 ms, all observed children cleaned up. Fresh runtime processes, uncontrolled OS caches/load; one pair does not establish a speedup. Baseline agent tokens and cloud-CI resource costs unmeasured. Actual candidate Codex CLI made one MCP call and returned correct count/ID/provenance (78,736 input tokens, 51,200 cached, 217 output). Its outer grader exited 1 on an unspecified source-wording enum; the original trace/exit was retained and the same trace semantically verified, with no model rerun. Full limitations and evidence: https://github.com/morluto/rea/pull/5787#issuecomment-6338446674.
  • Existing main findings about ignored write-query modes, encoded create-observation matching and fallback-absence ordering are not introduced by this change; they are not claimed fixed here.
  • Author readiness checkboxes were already checked by the contributor and remain unchanged. Only the empty owner placeholder is filled with factual PR author @earakely-scale; this update is not an attestation that a new human review occurred.

It was `all` only when *every* checked line of the tool listed the whole collection. One filtered line (`?library_id=…`, `?name=…`) therefore kept all of the tool's lines to their recorded members. An entity a task loaded with `data/add`, or a served write created, then never appeared in that tool's lists, even on the unfiltered line where the application had shown it lists everything. This PR decides that per line. It also stops a whole list from confirming a create whose entity a read has already shown gone. Part of #4933. **Stacked on #5600**, merged in at `dc5e2aad`; until #5600 lands, the diff against main includes it. The new work is: - `environmentStateGate.ts`, `environmentStateRules.ts`, `environmentStateView.ts`: per-line membership and the counter names; - `environmentStateWriteChecks.ts`, `EnvironmentStateWriteSimulation.ts`: per-line checks and insert retries, and dropping a write from its collection on an observed absence; - `environmentStateAnswer.ts`: per-line serving; - tests, docs and `docs/specs/agent-environments/list-lines/`. ## Problem and expected behavior - **Per-line membership.** A recorded-membership list view now names, in `all_record_ordinals`, each checked line that meets the conditions `all` asks of every line: - no query, or paging parameters only; - exactly the entities of its collection, in state order; - no total that differs from the number listed, and no next page. - **What a whole line does.** A call answered on such a line lists every entity of the collection. Calls on those lines now list the state, including what `data/add` loads and served writes change. Three of them back a type with a served write (Airbyte tags, BookStack books, Linkding tags). - Served writes stay at 31. Airbyte's tag delete is now served: a list after the delete shows the tag gone. Sentry's release create in the pool's earlier manifest is now unconfirmed: its only confirmation was a list taken after the release was deleted and shown gone. - No other view or plan changed. The six environments republished with newer manifests keep every write verdict. - **Six environments against their live applications** (`environment-compare`, probes from #5699 plus held-out sessions): - NetBox 98.5%, Komga 91.5%, Mealie 94.0%, n8n 71.6%, Shlink 87.1% and Sentry 24.5%, before and after. No step changed. - Komga is the environment whose lists gain whole lines, but with #5600's newest head its collection create is unconfirmed, so nothing is created for a list to show. On the previous #5600 head the same comparison moved Komga from 94.7% to 95.2%. Details are in `docs/specs/agent-environments/list-lines/verification.md`. **Remaining proof gaps:** - The live comparison shows no change at #5600's current head; the benefit is shown by the census and the tests, not by a probe. - A whole line must list the collection in state order; a line sorted another way stays recorded. For evidence-bearing changes: - [x] Observed, derived, and inferred claims remain distinguishable. - [x] Artifact identity, source provenance, and failed attempts remain preserved. - [x] Unsupported, incomplete, unavailable, or uncertain outcomes remain visible. ## Validation performed Run on macOS with Node v22.23.1 at 40800631 (the last code change; the next commit is the verification record). - `npm run build:cached`, `npm run check:fast` (typecheck and lint), `npm run format:check`, `npx knip`, `npm run scan:todos`, `npm run docs:check`, `npm run verify:test-discovery` and `npm run mcp-catalog:check`: passed. - `npm run jscpd`: 3.45% duplicated lines over 3646 files, under the 3.5% gate. - `npx vitest run --project domain --project services`: 7616 passed, 5 pre-existing skips. - `npm run test:prepare`, then `npm run test:focused --` the environment serve and export CLI boundaries, the serve and served-writes MCP boundaries, the analysis-view CLI and MCP boundaries, the compact input schema boundary and tool schema validity: 8 files, 78 passed. - **Review round (head 7ffd0772):** - Merged #5600 at 73c0e9b5 and 6d28aa78, and main at 4dfa1c67. The contract description conflicted only where main added its Rust and GPU entries. - Six of Greptile's eight findings were in #5600's code and were fixed there in 9f513d07: - the gate chooses a read's line as serving does; - a read made while a write was still running checks nothing; - a later call that contradicts the plan refuses it; - a collection the capture listed empty keeps its spelling; - wide arrays no longer overflow the stack; - the guide counts the served write tools. - This branch fixed the other two in 7ffd0772: - list counters come from whole lines and update per line, so a partial page no longer drops a whole line's total; - a failed item check that takes an answer with no entity drops that entity's collection claims. - Each new test fails on the previous head. - Gates passed: `check:fast`, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog, with no oxlint warnings. Domain and services 7717 (5 pre-existing skips); boundaries 83; conformance 279; `jscpd` 3.43%. - Over the 50 captures, the merges changed nothing. The two fixes add `total` to BookStack's pages and `count` to Linkding's tags, and served write tools stay at 31. The six environments compare exactly as before. - This section's earlier text had captured command output in place of the command names; it is restored from the verification record. - **Review round 2 (head de13b0c5):** merged #5600 at 43d98ea9 in 3e18322e. - **Review round 3 (head 9b868c07):** - Merged #5600 at 264ce410, 0ae64400, 6257de93, 466ed8b4, 7cef2fb2, 45a5c8b9 and 325c128f (2807278f, 34cbdd65, 4f40bff4, f239fa30, 8eea9f6d, 27dd6062, 9b868c07). Their fixes settle the seven findings Greptile raised here against that branch's code: a `_start`–`_end` range escaping the page cap, fields an update removed, entities named by a double decode, later creates' generated formats, an initial state too large to load back, zero page sizes erasing positive bounds, and interference timed by a tool's call on another collection. - The page cap here now uses that branch's `pageBound`, and `#retryInsert` reads its line's collection directly to stay under the line limit. - Gates passed on 9b868c07: `check:fast`, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog, with no oxlint warnings in the changed files; domain and services 7754 (5 pre-existing skips); environment boundaries 63; conformance 265; `jscpd` 3.43%. - Over the 50 captures no view or write plan changed and served write tools stay at 31; the six environments compare exactly as before. - **Review round 4 (head 20135117):** #5600 was restacked onto main, so 891f35e7 merges its 717ac2c4 with 325c128f, the commit last merged here, as the base. This branch's own changes carry over line for line. Merged main 2451e187 in 20135117. - Gates passed: `check:fast`, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog; domain and services 7835 (5 pre-existing skips); environment boundaries 63; `jscpd` 3.47%. - Over the 50 captures, no view or write plan changed against 9b868c07, and served write tools stay at 31. - The held-out comparison was not rerun. It needs #5699's compare command, and #5699 and this branch now conflict in `environmentStateAnswer.ts`, `environmentStateGate.ts`, `environmentStateWriteChecks.ts` and two docs tables. - **Review round 5 (head 79f0560e):** Greptile's two findings here, a failed read rejecting valid writes and changing fields confirming unproved writes, were in #5600's code. Both are fixed there in ccdf091a and merged here with #5600 at 3f1f825e. - 0fe17380 moves `writtenFieldChecks` into the attribution module, keeping the checks under the line limit. - Gates passed: `check:fast`, format, knip, todos, docs, discovery, module boundaries and catalog; domain and services 7886 (5 pre-existing skips); environment boundaries 64; `jscpd` 3.41%. On an earlier run of this round, two heavy domain tests (the keyed-archive traversal and the 125,000-dependent graph) timed out under load; they passed when rerun and on the final run. - Over the 50 captures no view or write plan changed against round 4, and served write tools stay at 31. - **Restacked onto main after #5600 landed (head 0499ed1b):** merged main up to b8c1b453, then #5600's squash 538017d1 with 3f1f825e as the base. The branch gained only #5600's final commit, which bounds the served clock. Its diff against main is now its own work. Gates passed: domain and services 7899 (5 pre-existing skips) and environment boundaries 65. ## Compatibility, safety, and release - Breaking changes or migration steps: none. List views gain an optional member, and existing states load unchanged. - Real Hopper/Ghidra, browser, or OS coverage: not applicable. - Package or release metadata impact: none. - Security, privacy, process, or containment review: no new inputs; reads retained Evidence only. ## Author readiness Human owner: @earakely-scale - [x] I reviewed the final diff and relevant existing code, understand the change and its edge cases, and take responsibility for the complete PR, including AI-assisted work. - [x] I checked the evidence above, confirmed it supports the current change, and recorded meaningful validation gaps. - [x] I declare this PR ready for initial maintainer review. ## Before merge - [x] This PR addresses a concrete problem or an agreed enhancement. - [x] Material scope and authority questions are resolved, and any required maintainer scope decision covers the final diff. - [x] The PR has one focused outcome and the title follows `type(scope): outcome`. - [x] Related issue is linked, or the reason for not linking one is stated above. - [x] Tests cover changed observable behavior and meaningful failure paths. - [x] Owning docs, contracts, and generated metadata are updated where needed. - [x] User-visible CLI/MCP changes include representative output. - [x] I checked the final diff for secrets, unrelated cleanup, and unsupported claims. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) ## Maintainer integration — 2026-10-22 (`36571c494`) - Preserved contributor history and merged current main `3a42a9e35`, retaining its shared path decoder. No CI configuration changes and no Co-authored-by trailer. - Fixed whole-line admission at the paging owner: empty later/ambiguous pages cannot expose earlier entities after data/add. Positions must establish zero; page numbering not observed as zero-/one-based remains unknown. A valid mixed-line regression fails before the fix (new earlier entity returned for offset=2) and passes afterwards; aliases, malformed and repeated positions are covered. - Executed: 543 unique focused/adjacent domain/service/public CLI/MCP tests, plus three repeated 39-test stability runs; complete `npm run check`; `npm run docs:check` including 9 README tests; pre-push `check:fast`. - Real read-only GitHub API capture: 44 repository labels plus a one-item page, HAR SHA-256 `62db6a3c0f0cd6be433f358fd5c3e13eaa058059a5b669bf557490527c3e23cf`. - Whole verification task: main 20.46 s wall / 28.73 s CPU / 505.76 MiB sampled process-family RSS; candidate 18.09 s / 25.89 s / 490.87 MiB. - Existing main findings about ignored write-query modes, encoded create-observation matching and fallback-absence ordering are not introduced by this change; they are not claimed fixed here. - Author readiness checkboxes were already checked by the contributor and remain unchanged. Only the empty owner placeholder is filled with factual PR author @earakely-scale; this update is not an attestation that a new human review occurred. --- 🔄 This issue represents a GitHub Pull Request.
