Hello,

I'm attempting to install the RTL8812AU driver on Kali Linux with kernel 6.16.8+kali-amd64, but the installation fails during the DKMS build process.

System Information:

  • OS: Kali Linux (latest rolling release)
  • Kernel: 6.16.8+kali-amd64
  • Architecture: x86_64
  • Adapter: Realtek RTL8812AU (AC Wireless Adapter, 2.4 & 5 GHz)
  • GCC Version: gcc (Debian 15.2.0-7) 15.2.0
  • DKMS: 3.2.2

Installation command:

sudo ./install-driver.sh

Error Output:

Sign command: /lib/modules/6.16.8+kali-amd64/build/scripts/sign-file
Signing key: /var/lib/dkms/mok.key
Public certificate (MOK): /var/lib/dkms/mok.pub
Building module(s)...(bad exit status: 2)
Failed command:
kernelver=6.16.8+kali-amd64 ./dkms-make.sh
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 6.16.8+kali-amd64 (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/rtl8812au/5.13.6-23/build/make.log for more information.
An error occurred. dkms build error: 10

Question:
Is kernel 6.16.x supported yet? If not, are there plans to add support, or is there a workaround available?

The official Kali package realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms also fails with a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE warning indicating it won't build for this kernel version.

Thank you for maintaining this driver!

Hi @january1073

No, no and no. See the top of the README. Kernel 6.14 is the version where API updates ended as that is the kernel where the new in-kernel driver entered mainline.

If you Kali is running kernel 6.16, you not need to add a driver unless Kali has messed things up. Did you try to use the adapter without trying to install any drivers?

Reading the README often helps. Embarrassing.

After your reply I tested the interface again and it appears to be a hardware compatibility issue with ThinkPad. On another machine the adapter worked fine.

Sorry for bothering you.
