Description

Clicking the enabled Commit button appeared to do nothing. No error was visible in the Git bar; we had to open Chrome’s developer console to discover the cause.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a Git repository without a configured author name/email.
  2. Stage a changed file and enter a commit message (we used AI generation).
  3. Click Commit.

Actual behavior

The commit fails without a visible explanation. Chrome’s developer console shows HTTP 400 and an uncaught promise rejection containing:

Author identity unknown
fatal: unable to auto-detect email address

Expected behavior

The Git bar should display the commit error and explain that user.name and user.email need to be configured.

Workaround

Setting the repository’s Git author name and email allowed the commit to succeed.

Other Git bar errors may also be affected, but this report is specifically about missing author identity.

I found some existing issues that might be related. Please check if any of these are duplicates or contain helpful solutions:

  1. 🟣 #139 bug: LLM commit message generation fails with "Could not generate a commit message"
Related because it is another commit-related Git bar failure where the UI surfaces an unhelpful or missing error message during commit generation/commit workflow. It suggests the same area of the code may not be propagating backend failures back to the Git bar UI.

  2. 🟣 #178 issue: provider returned error
Related because it reports that an error is not shown in the UI, matching the core problem here: the Git bar/assistant workflow failing silently from the user's perspective even though an underlying backend error occurred.
