I think the people who's communities will be destroyed do in fact care. I am not a hero, I'm just the messenger.

The thing is, it's not an "efficiency" tool. It's a tool designed to bring AI slop modding to the masses and I, as an anti-ai advocate and modder of many games myself, cannot let that happen.

Took you 7 minutes to come up with 'as an anti-ai advocate' 💀 Bro thinks he's standing at the gates of Helm's Deep. You aren't stopping anything, people are still gonna use the tool, and nobody asked for your life story. Go touch grass 😭🥀

You sound younger than me right now... I'm not sure what these "gates of Helm's Deep" are, but it definitely sounds like something I might be standing at right now, even if you don't realise it. Sure, people may still use the tool, but if I can do anything about it, they won't be using it for any of the games I care about. I never gave my life story - that's not something I share publicly on the internet. And no one said there was grass out there to touch.

Sure, I take quite a bit to write my motivational messages and long essays on steam but that doesn't mean my choice of words isn't good.

Bro, what are people who don't know how to code supposed to do if they want to bring their idea to life? Spend a couple of months on technical prototypes instead of creating the actual "gameplay"?
From my personal experience, the overwhelming majority of mods across all games simply add a new object rather than a mechanic or a "gameplay problem". Factorio is a huge example of this. It's just expansion, not the creation of something new and interesting. Just a change of scenery.
Instead of spending a couple of weeks learning modding, people could spend that time on their own ideas and improving them.
AI can't be stopped simply because it's a very "JANKY" technology that requires a massive amount of data to do basic things, but at the same time it's capable of automating things that people would never be able to do with their own hands. The printing press and mass education flooded literature with garbage. Do you want to go back to an age of servile labor and widespread illiteracy?
We sacrifice one thing to optimize another.

Learn how to code, that's what. There are plenty of books and tutorials and real people out there that can help them learn programming. Don't want to spend a year+ of your life learning a useful skill? That's likely a problem with you, not with the difficulty of learning coding, but you can always try and find a real friend to code stuff for you. Even experienced developers will "spend a couple of months on technical prototypes instead of creating the actual "gameplay"", it's not like good games can be made in a month by a single person or anything. The lesson is that it takes time. Everything does, but making some good in particular takes a lot.

"Factorio is a huge example of this." As a factorio mod developer myself, I can tell you that if you filter the mod portal by Overhaul, you're much more likely to find the kind of mod you're looking for, that significantly changes the game. The description of the filter says "Large total conversion mods."... Can you not read something for once?

You know, it's quite possible to both learn to code and work on an idea at the same time.
AI can be stopped, by saying no to the people building and running them. You just need enough of it. As a side bonus, the RAM and GPU prices go down. AI cannot do anything that the right people can't either. In fact, it can't do a lot of things that the right people can as well. By the time it can, AI will be destroying/ruling over/controlling/etc. everyone, like in all the science fiction stories.
Either way, the amount of people unable to do this specific task would keep getting smaller if not for AI, as it keeps doing the entire job for them. Something no computer ever needed to do.

I don't want to go back to an age of "servile labor" and "widespread illiteracy", but if that would stop people from getting AI to do everything for them, then sure. Jokes aside, the printing press and mass education 1. dId not "flood literature with garbage" and 2. are nothing like AI. It's so obvious why that I don't even need to tell you.

I know how to code. I've been modding games since I was 12 years old. I'm now 28. This has helped me figure out things that were previously deemed impossible to do. The slop will not stop but people who actually know their shit will benefit from this immensely. For example I'm trying to do a proper mash-up by bringing Watch_Dogs Legion's RTX rendering pass over to Watch_Dogs. Since they're on the same engine WDL's DLL doesn't have that many differing names and classes and is easier to port than say CyberPunk 2077's DLL. Also it does not need WDL running inside it or vice versa. I'm simply porting WD1 to DX12 using WDL as a donor and using WDL's shaders as a reference (also ubisoft accidentally shipped WD1's full shader sources with WD1 in shaders.dat). Many of the notes I've shared come from my 16+ years of modding that is stored on my hard disk or that I've released into the wild.

You say you "cannot let that happen" but what you do not seem to understand is it's simply not in your control. You do not have the means to shut down this repo. You do not posses the control to stop AI companies from operating. Simply put you think you have more contol than you do. Instead of getting all bent out of shape over AI slop modding why not teach those who are willing to learn? This may very well be the gateway to which they learn how to do real mods. Any person I've ever met who has seriously gotten into AI learns a lot about what they're trying to do whether they intend to or not. If someone's putting out slop they're not serious about what they're doing.

You do realize this approach just galvanizes people to lean on AI more to spite you, right?

People like you are, accidentally, the biggest pro-AI advocates. You create undue amounts of positive press for them. Show what you create is better and people will naturally flow that direction, whatever this is will never work.

Thanks for the discussion, everyone. This thread has turned into personal back-and-forth, so I'm closing and locking it.

For what it's worth, the rules here push the other way from low-effort output: notes name the agent and model, say what wasn't verified and credit the people they build on, and nothing ships other people's work (CONTRIBUTING.md). If there's a concrete problem with how the tool behaves in a game you care about, a focused issue is welcome.
