Alexander Brown f2d5bfab73 test(browser): refactor browser tests for reliability and maintainability (#8510)
## Summary

Major refactoring of browser tests to improve reliability,
maintainability, and type safety.

## Changes

### Test Infrastructure Decomposition
- Decomposed `ComfyPage.ts` (~1000 lines) into focused helpers:
- `CanvasHelper`, `DebugHelper`, `SubgraphHelper`,
`NodeOperationsHelper`
- `SettingsHelper`, `WorkflowHelper`, `ClipboardHelper`,
`KeyboardHelper`
- Created `ContextMenu` page object, `BaseDialog` base class, and
`BottomPanel` page object
- Extracted `DefaultGraphPositions` constants

### Locator Stability
- Added `data-testid` attributes to Vue components (sidebar, dialogs,
node library)
- Created centralized `selectors.ts` with test ID constants
- Replaced fragile CSS selectors (`.nth()`, `:nth-child()`) with
`getByTestId`/`getByRole`

### Performance & Reliability
- Removed `setTimeout` anti-patterns (replaced with `waitForFunction`)
- Replaced `waitForTimeout` with retrying assertions
- Replaced hardcoded coordinates with computed `NodeReference` positions
- Enforced LF line endings for all text files

### Type Safety
- Enabled `no-explicit-any` lint rule for browser_tests via oxlint
- Purged `as any` casts from browser_tests
- Added Window type augmentation for standardized window access
- Added proper type annotations throughout

### Bug Fixes
- Restored `ExtensionManager` API contract
- Removed test-only settings from production schema
- Fixed flaky selectors and missing test setup

## Testing
- All browser tests pass
- Typecheck passes

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Tests**
* Overhauled browser E2E test infrastructure with many new
helpers/fixtures, updated test APIs, and CI test container image bumped
for consistency.

* **Chores**
* Standardized line endings and applied stricter lint rules for browser
tests; workspace dependency version updated.

* **Documentation**
* Updated Playwright and TypeScript testing guidance and test-run
commands.

* **UI**
* Added stable data-testids to multiple components to improve
testability.

Playwright E2E Test Conventions

See docs/testing/*.md for detailed patterns.

Best Practices

  • Follow Playwright Best Practices
  • Do NOT use waitForTimeout - use Locator actions and retrying assertions
  • Prefer specific selectors (role, label, test-id)
  • Test across viewports

Window Globals

Browser tests access window.app, window.graph, and window.LiteGraph which are optional in the main app types. In E2E tests, use non-null assertions (!):

window.app!.graph!.nodes
window.LiteGraph!.registered_node_types

This is the only context where non-null assertions are acceptable.

TODO: Consolidate these references into a central utility (e.g., getApp()) that performs proper runtime type checking, removing the need for scattered ! assertions.

Type Assertions in E2E Tests

E2E tests may use specific type assertions when needed, but never as any.

Acceptable Patterns

// ✅ Non-null assertions for window globals
window.app!.extensionManager

// ✅ Specific type assertions with documentation
// Extensions can register arbitrary setting IDs
id: 'TestSetting' as TestSettingId

// ✅ Test-local type helpers
type TestSettingId = keyof Settings

Forbidden Patterns

// ❌ Never use `as any`
settings: testData as any

// ❌ Never modify production types to satisfy test errors
// Don't add test settings to src/schemas/apiSchema.ts

// ❌ Don't chain through unknown to bypass types
data as unknown as SomeType // Avoid; prefer explicit typings or helpers

Accessing Internal State

When tests need internal store properties (e.g., .workflow, .focusMode):

// ✅ Access stores directly in page.evaluate
await page.evaluate(() => {
  const store = useWorkflowStore()
  return store.activeWorkflow
})

// ❌ Don't change public API types to expose internals
// Keep app.extensionManager typed as ExtensionManager, not WorkspaceStore

Test Tags

Tags are respected by config:

  • @mobile - Mobile viewport tests
  • @2x - High DPI tests

Test Data

  • Check browser_tests/assets/ for test data and fixtures
  • Use realistic ComfyUI workflows for E2E tests

Running Tests

pnpm test:browser:local                 # Run all E2E tests
pnpm test:browser:local -- --ui # Interactive UI mode
