Environment

🐧 Linux

System

endeavourOS (kde plasma 6)

Describe the problem

I execute the launcher.sh (from the file not the terminal) and the terminal pops up and runs the launcher. It then pops up again, and again. It happens as fast as my computer can start a new process.

Additional info

I followed the instructions exactly for the install a few hours ago.

I have used the launcher before (both linux and windows) and this is the first time I have ever come across this bug.

The only way to stop it from creating more terminals is to ctrl+alt+delete and restart. A log out doesn't stop the process and it just resumes when I log back in.

If I launch silly tavern with chmod +x launcher.sh && ./launcher.sh this doesn't happen and it launches like normal. But not only does this mean I have to open a terminal from the folder with the files, but I won't be able to make a shortcut in my applauncher menu.

@GadricGraywind Thanks for the report. I will try to recreate this with the same distro to see if it acts the same way. still strange why it spams terminals. this is the first report about it

Thank you. If you need any more info about the files let me know. I will leave this tab open so I remember to check in.

edit: I also noticed this issue doesn't happen if I use the desktop shortcut, only when I double click the actual launcher.sh

edit2: I also notice it doesn't let me install things like text completion through the launcher (says coming soon) even though I know I've used that before.

@GadricGraywind
Can you try adding

pgrep -f "launcher.sh" | grep -v "$$" >/dev/null && exit

to the very top of the .sh file and see if that solves it?

I moved over to kubuntu since then. used the instructions to clone the git, can confirm this happens still. This time it happened when I typed 1 to install sillytavern (also it still happens when I click launcher.sh).

I added that to the top of the launcher.sh

This did not solve the issue. The only thing that is the same between this OS and the last one is they both use KDE Plasma and konsole if that helps. This was a nearly fresh install, I only just installed vivaldi and steam.

edit: updated system info (hardware is the same)

@Rox73 commented on GitHub (Oct 16, 2025):

I believe the automatic closing of Konsole is what creates the loop.
If anyone needs a fix, here's an example command to use in the shortcut (for the KDE Menu Editor):

Program:
konsole

Command-line arguments:
konsole --hold --separate -e bash -lc 'cd /mnt/NFiles1/Applications/Linux/SillyTavern-Launcher && ./launcher.sh; exec bash'

Explanation:
--hold: Keeps the terminal window open after the command completes
--separate: Opens in a new process
-e bash -lc: Executes the command in a login shell
exec bash: Ensures a bash shell remains active after the script finishes

This prevents the terminal from closing prematurely and breaking the execution loop.

Was experiencing this same issue on Linux Mint. Every time I would launch launcher.sh the loop would happen, and when I'd run it in the terminal, it just wouldn't start.

Thankfully, the fix for me was installing the newest LTS of Node.js and installing it. I was previously on 18.xxx, now I'm on 24.13. Smooth sailing so far after this.
