The answer is
"Consult /var/lib/dkms/amneziawg/1.0.0/build/make.log".

To solve the problem having a "modern kernel" one have to

  1. download (and may be patch) correspondent kernel source tree
  2. create symlink
  3. run make && make install in /var/lib/dkms/amneziawg/1.0.0/build directory
  4. persuade your distro that amneziawg-dkms is installed (e.g. by editing /var/lib/dpkg/status)
  5. go further with other packets

In case somebody else is trying to figure it out. That's how I got it running on MX Linux (Debian) with Kernel 6.15.11-1-liquorix-amd64. Change according to your needs (uname -r).

  1. Download one of the linux-6.15.11.tar.* from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v6.x/ and verify its signature
  2. Extract it, for example to ~/linux-source
  3. sudo apt install dwarves
  4. First, check your vmlinux is in /sys/kernel/btf then (or change accordingly):
    sudo cp /sys/kernel/btf/vmlinux /usr/lib/modules/6.15.11-1-liquorix-amd64/build/
  5. Backup the file /usr/src/linux-headers-6.15.11-1-liquorix-amd64/scripts/Makefile.modfinal then uncomment or delete the following lines from it:
ifdef CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF_MODULES
       +$(if $(newer-prereqs),$(call cmd,btf_ko))
endif

Now manual build as per https://github.com/amnezia-vpn/amneziawg-linux-kernel-module?tab=readme-ov-file#manual-build (via make, sudo make install) works. Ignore the output "Warning: modules_install: missing 'System.map' file. Skipping depmod."...

== Autostart ==

Assuming https://github.com/amnezia-vpn/amneziawg-tools have then been put in the folder /usr/bin with the right owner and permissions (-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root), autostart via systemctl can easily be enabled. Create the two files with the following content:

  1. sudo nano /lib/systemd/system/awg-quick.target

[Unit]
Description=Amnezia-WG Tunnels via awg-quick(8)

  1. sudo nano /lib/systemd/system/awg-quick@.service
