In global web app settings, I enable open external links in browser app.

Then I add a web app link to start.duckduckgo.com (the clean homepage).

This should give me search results in native alpha and links to open externally.

Unfortunately, search results open externally, even though the results page is the duckduckgo.com domain.

Is the app not capable of detecting that the domains match or am I doing something wrong?

@JonnyTech Correct, I did not change anything with respect to this behaviour in the latest release.

Imho, there is no obvious solution to this case. You suggest that if the start URL is "start.duckduckgo.com" then any "duckduckgo.com" URL should be considered internal, or in general, all "X.Y.com" apps should consider "Y.com" internal. I am not sure this is a wanted behaviour in all cases. The actual hierarchy is the other way around: For all "Y.com" apps, "X.Y.com" can be considered internal because the latter is a special case of the former.

I need to think about this further. The best solution in terms of functionality would be a configurable whitelist, but that could be cumbersome for some users...

Thank you for your reply and consideration @cylonid, your comfirmation of the current functionality makes perfect sense and imho should be kept as is.

I have now discovered that duckduckgo/html exists which is close enough for my needs and I shall request from them something similar for the clean start homepage.

Therefore I am closing this issue.
