I'm trying to compile this on linux but am encountering issues. Some instructions would be much appreciated.

This is what I'm getting so far:

I believe the plan is to replace some of the emulators with the RetroArch counter-part.

I agree with this. I tried to run "./configure" and got:
checking build system type... Invalid configuration ``x86_64-unknown-linux-': machine ``x86_64-unknown-linux' not recognized
I'm guessing I need the config.sub file to tell me what options I need to provide for this. However, when I tried to run config.sub I got:
config.sub: missing argument
but I can't find what arguments this file needs. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

+1 to this. I am unable to compile. Autoconf generates a bunch of errors.

I was able to run ./configure with the source from sourceforge.net:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gens/postdownload

However there is a compilation error now:

gens_core/cpu/68k/cpu_68k.c:63:24: error: initializer element is not constant

I hope that participants for this issue will see this message.
We have stopped shipping the GenS runner to replace it with Libretro based cores.
The original project is not actively developed and we don't have the resources (or the necessity) to maintain a fork.
I'm going to archive this repo and if there is a good reason to reopen it in the future, we'll do that.
