Observed behavior

Source-only documentation finding. A reader expanding “Which analysis tool should I use?” in the native guide sees IDA labeled “Windows,” alongside host-platform labels for Hopper and Ghidra. The IDA entry mentions an existing installation and MCP registration, without limiting the statement to attached GUI mode or identifying it as historical evidence.

Following its setup link reveals an IDA macOS headless profile. The setup instructions and provider verification record agree on that specific option. I checked the authored sources with the commands below; I did not launch IDA or reproduce an analysis failure.

Reproduction

  1. From the source revision below, print the native guide's provider chooser:

    sed -n '312,338p' website/public/guides/native/index.html

  2. Print the linked setup page's IDA table row and setup section:

    sed -n '1019,1023p;1235,1266p' website/public/get-started/index.html

  3. Print the provider verification record and website maintenance rule:

    sed -n '241p' docs/ida-provider.md
    sed -n '51,53p' website/AGENTS.md

I ran this final sequence once at the stated revision. It shows an IDA chooser entry labeled Windows beside documentation of a verified macOS arm64 headless profile. No input binary, provider installation, or registration is required for this static comparison.

Expected behavior

Current provider-selection advice should acknowledge the documented macOS arm64 headless profile or qualify the Windows label to the intended lifecycle profile. The website's maintenance rule requires setup/support statements to match the current provider guides, while preserving historical case-study evidence.

Keep the existing qualification that this macOS profile requires a source build or a release containing the changes. This report does not request broader macOS attached-GUI support, all IDA versions, or unverified Linux headless support.

Impact and scope

The demonstrated impact is inconsistent host-platform guidance and provider discoverability. A macOS reader can reasonably infer that IDA is unavailable from the chooser even though the linked setup page describes a qualified headless route. No blocked analysis, incorrect output, installation failure, or financial consequence was demonstrated.

The existing “Set up native analysis” link provides a practical way to reach the more accurate profile descriptions. The finding covers the English source at the stated revision; deployed pages and translations were not inspected.

REA version

Exact output of node scripts/rea.mjs --version:

6.8.0

Source revision: 65f1c447344a423fa2785847dbcea1e9a9e2454a.

Runtime and platform

Node.js v24.22.1; macOS 27.0.1; Darwin arm64. The version command used isolated HOME/XDG state. No IDA runtime was exercised.

Target and artifact context

Authored English website pages and the IDA provider guide. No native target artifact.

Relevant output or evidence

At the revision above:

  • website/public/guides/native/index.html:312-338: current analysis-tool chooser; the IDA entry has a Windows host label and no attached-only or historical qualifier. The same disclosure links the reader to setup.
  • website/public/get-started/index.html:1019-1023: the IDA row lists verified Windows profiles and a verified macOS headless profile.
  • website/public/get-started/index.html:1235-1266: attached/headless registration choices, the macOS arm64 IDA Professional 9.1 profile, the source-build/release caveat, and source-checkout commands.
  • docs/ida-provider.md:241: records macOS arm64 headless verification with IDA Professional 9.1 build 9.1.250226 and upstream commit c133c3853faa111a9b00ee615c013b720d0c4acd; separately leaves other combinations unverified. This is a recorded claim in the repository, not a real-provider run performed for this report.
  • website/AGENTS.md:51-53: current setup/support consistency rule and preservation of historical checkpoints.
  • website/public/guides/index.html:231: normal guide-hub link to the affected page.

Analysis or suspected cause

The defect is the unqualified provider-wide host label in current setup advice. Reading it as attached-only lacks support in the sentence; a required MCP registration also applies to headless mode. Reading it as a historical checkpoint lacks a date, version, or other qualifier in the disclosure. The page's historical DX-Ball results do not turn its present-tense setup instructions into historical support statements. The change history responsible for the mismatch was not established.

Additional context

Duplicate searches covered open/closed issues, all PR states, and issue comments. Related website work #3274 records the macOS headless/release-gap guidance in Get started; it does not change this native-guide chooser or claim to fix its host label. #985 concerns readability, and #7596 concerns Kuna missing from README requirements. No report of this same host-label inconsistency was found.

Triage assessment

  • Impact level: P3
  • Assessment status: supported
  • Impact basis: The verified result is contradictory documentation wording and provider discoverability; no consequential runtime failure was demonstrated.
  • Workaround status: available
  • Workaround basis: The affected chooser already links to setup, which describes the specific macOS headless profile and its release requirements.
