There are MCP server containers that expose over SSE rather than stdio - can we successfully proxy those to Open-WebUI as well?
@tjbck commented on GitHub (Mar 30, 2025):
would love to see PRs for this!
@dtinth commented on GitHub (Apr 1, 2025):
I’m currently using Supergateway to make
mcpowork with SSE MCP servers.My setup:
@iamdaveloper commented on GitHub (Apr 3, 2025):
In this appoach, mcpo and supergateway are same purpose? Can we connect supergateway directly (skip mcpo)?
@dtinth commented on GitHub (Apr 3, 2025):
@iamdaveloper Not right now because
Open WebUI
mcpo
Supergateway
That is, until
mcpogains native SSE support. Right now it is hardcoded to use stdio transport frommcp.client.stdio:github.com/open-webui/mcpo@e55975a876/src/mcpo/main.py (L128-L138)This may be implemented by making mcpo able to use
mcp.client.sse. Maybe someone can vibe up a PR to implement support for this?@eric2788 commented on GitHub (Apr 3, 2025):
can we skip stdio and using supergateway with mcpo? 🤔 It seems we can also use
npx -yto run supergateway@tjbck commented on GitHub (Apr 9, 2025):

@tjbck Antropic released new specifications a while ago.

I mean, we can add SSE support, but honestly, I prefer streamable HTTP over SSE. Since it is much easier to develop.
@lowlyocean commented on GitHub (Apr 10, 2025):
Just keep in mind many MCP servers may not be updated to this new release. There's always excitement when a new tech arrives, but shortly after you wind up with (an abundance of) unmaintained implementations
skipping straight to streamable HTTP over SSE may render a large swath of servers inaccessible
@bmen25124 commented on GitHub (Apr 10, 2025):
@lowlyocean SSE is not adapted by industry from my point of view. Even Claude Desktop doesn't have a support.
But you made your point, So, I'm not against it.
@nohaz-h commented on GitHub (Apr 12, 2025):
I have submitted a PR #69 that allows SSE connection without the use of supergateway in case others want to test it out.
@dtinth commented on GitHub (Apr 12, 2025):
Now that SSE transport is now deprecated in favor of Streamable HTTP transport introduced in latest draft, should the scope of this issue be changed to that one instead?
@tjbck commented on GitHub (Apr 12, 2025):
https://github.com/open-webui/mcpo/pull/69 merged, feel free to create a new issue post regarding the http transport protocol support.
@eric2788 commented on GitHub (Apr 13, 2025):
Considering of backward support, sse should still be included
@taylorwilsdon commented on GitHub (May 11, 2025):
Here ya go @eric2788 / @dtinth - https://github.com/open-webui/mcpo/pull/129
Give it a try let me know what you think!
@fundoop commented on GitHub (Jul 2, 2025):
Maybe you can try to use fastmcp to transfer the server type
