Hi @ukfliers-coder! I'm Dosu and I’m helping the desktop team.

The error code 3221225477 (hex 0xC0000005) is a Windows access violation. This is a known issue with two common causes:

1. Outdated NVIDIA Drivers (most likely)
Update your NVIDIA drivers to the latest version. Newer ComfyUI versions require updated GPU drivers to function properly.

2. Installation Path Issues
Your logs show validation passed, so this is less likely, but if updating drivers doesn't help:

  • Uninstall ComfyUI Desktop
  • Delete C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI and %APPDATA%\ComfyUI
  • Reinstall to a location outside of OneDrive or any sync folders (e.g., C:\ComfyUI)

Start with updating your NVIDIA drivers—that resolves this error in most cases.

Hi @ukfliers-coder https://github.com/ukfliers-coder ! I'm Dosu https://go.dosu.dev/dosubot and I’m helping the desktop team.

The error code 3221225477 (hex 0xC0000005) is a Windows access violation. This is a known issue https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1494 with two common causes:

  1. Outdated NVIDIA Drivers (most likely)
Update your NVIDIA drivers to the latest version. Newer ComfyUI versions require updated GPU drivers to function properly.

  2. Installation Path Issues
Your logs show validation passed, so this is less likely, but if updating drivers doesn't help:

  • Uninstall ComfyUI Desktop
  • Delete C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI and %APPDATA%\ComfyUI
  • Reinstall to a location outside of OneDrive or any sync folders (e.g., C:\ComfyUI)

Start with updating your NVIDIA drivers—that resolves this error in most cases.

@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Feb 19, 2026):

Thanks for trying those steps. Since drivers are current and you've reinstalled cleanly, let's dig deeper:

1. Verify the virtual environment exists
Check if C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI\.venv contains a Scripts\python.exe file. If the folder is empty or missing, the Python environment didn't install correctly—possibly due to antivirus interference or network issues during setup.

2. Try these additional steps:

  • Temporarily disable Windows Defender/antivirus during installation
  • Delete these additional folders before reinstalling:
    • %LOCALAPPDATA%\@comfyorgcomfyui-electron-updater
    • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\@comfyorgcomfyui-electron
  • Install to a simple path like C:\ComfyUI (not Documents or any user folder)
  • Run the installer as Administrator

3. Check CUDA support
If the .venv exists, open a command prompt in the ComfyUI folder and run:

.venv\Scripts\python.exe -c "import torch; print(torch.cuda.is_available())"

This should print True. If it prints False or errors, PyTorch may have installed without GPU support.

Could you share what GPU you have and whether the .venv folder exists with files in it?

To reply, just mention @dosu.

I have 3 folders on my drive. I have taken screenshots of contents. I never picked the roaming directory when installing . It installed to documents folder and then I chose C:\comfyui as the server install as instructed.

The first screenshot is “root” this is where the virtual environment exists and answer to your first question python.exe is not in there and not anywhere on my machine.

The next screenshot is documents under my user name.

The last folder is directly under Roaming, which I didn’t select at any time

Thanks,

Robert

Thanks for trying those steps. Since drivers are current and you've reinstalled cleanly, let's dig deeper:

  1. Verify the virtual environment exists
Check if C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI.venv contains a Scripts\python.exe file. If the folder is empty or missing, the Python environment didn't install correctly—possibly due to antivirus interference or network issues during setup https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1477 .

  2. Try these additional steps:

  • Temporarily disable Windows Defender/antivirus during installation

  • Delete these additional folders before reinstalling:

  • @.***

  • @.***

  • Install to a simple path like C:\ComfyUI (not Documents or any user folder)

  • Run the installer as Administrator

  1. Check CUDA support
If the .venv exists, open a command prompt in the ComfyUI folder and run:

.venv\Scripts\python.exe -c "import torch; print(torch.cuda.is_available())"

This should print True. If it prints False or errors, PyTorch may have installed without GPU support https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1495 .

Could you share what GPU you have and whether the .venv folder exists with files in it?

To reply, just mention @dosu https://go.dosu.dev/dosubot .

@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Feb 19, 2026):

Thanks for the details Robert—this clarifies the issue. The folder structure you're seeing is actually expected behavior:

  • AppData\Roaming\ComfyUI — Created automatically by the app for configuration files (this is normal, not selected by you)
  • Documents\ComfyUI or C:\ComfyUI — The user data directory you selected
  • Program Files or LocalAppData — The application itself

The critical problem is that python.exe is missing from the .venv\Scripts folder. This means the Python environment failed to download during installation. The app uses a tool called uv to download Python from GitHub, and if that fails silently, you end up with an empty or incomplete .venv.

Likely causes:

  • Network issues preventing Python download from GitHub
  • Antivirus blocking the download
  • Installation was interrupted

To fix this, try a fully clean reinstall:

  1. Uninstall ComfyUI Desktop
  2. Delete all of these folders:
    • C:\ComfyUI (or wherever you installed)
    • C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI
    • %APPDATA%\ComfyUI
    • %LOCALAPPDATA%\@comfyorgcomfyui-electron-updater
  3. Temporarily disable Windows Defender/antivirus
  4. Run the installer as Administrator
  5. Install to C:\ComfyUI

Watch the installation progress carefully—if Python download fails, you should see an error. If the issue persists, there may be a network/firewall blocking GitHub access. Could you confirm if you can access GitHub normally from your browser?

@ukfliers-coder commented on GitHub (Feb 19, 2026):

Same failure. You can’t see what is installing as the text is behind a dark background installer box. Python is not there again.

I can access github via the browser. My antivirus is Bitdefender and is switched off during installation this time.

I also have Nordvpn running – is that perhaps stopping it from getting to me?

Thanks,

Robert

Yes, NordVPN is very likely the culprit. VPNs are known to block the Python download that ComfyUI Desktop needs—even when browsing GitHub works normally in a browser. The uv tool downloads Python binaries from GitHub, and VPN tunnels often interfere with this.

Try this:

  1. Disconnect NordVPN completely (not just pause—fully disconnect)
  2. Do a clean reinstall (delete the folders as before)
  3. Run installer as Administrator
  4. Reconnect VPN after installation completes

If you need VPN on during install, try switching NordVPN to split tunneling mode and exclude the ComfyUI installer.

Alternative if VPN can't be disabled:
You can manually set up the Python environment after installation. First, install Python 3.12 from python.org, then in Command Prompt:

cd C:\ComfyUI
python -m venv .venv
.venv\Scripts\activate
pip install --upgrade pip
pip install -r "C:\Users\robert\AppData\Local\Programs\ComfyUI\resources\ComfyUI\requirements.txt"
pip install torch torchvision torchaudio --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu124

Let me know if disconnecting the VPN helps!

Disconnecting vpn didn’t change anything (I also had Bitdefender off).

Your manual install of python and updating instructions – I found these issues.

I couldn’t find how to install python or where to put the folder from the tar file.

I did install 3.12 from Microsoft Store…

I changed to C:\comfyUI manuall and ran the second line, third line. Problem with fourth line, it failed and told me to place python.exe in front. It did work then.

The fifth line you tell me to put in “local” when my resources folder is under “roaming”. I did as you said

We are still failing with same error.

Thanks,

Robert

Yes, NordVPN is very likely the culprit. VPNs are known to block the Python download https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1345 that ComfyUI Desktop needs—even when browsing GitHub works normally in a browser. The uv tool downloads Python binaries from GitHub, and VPN tunnels often interfere with this.

Try this:

  1. Disconnect NordVPN completely (not just pause—fully disconnect)
  2. Do a clean reinstall (delete the folders as before)
  3. Run installer as Administrator
  4. Reconnect VPN after installation completes

If you need VPN on during install, try switching NordVPN to split tunneling mode and exclude the ComfyUI installer.

Alternative if VPN can't be disabled:
You can manually set up the Python environment https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1477 after installation. First, install Python 3.12 from python.org https://www.python.org/downloads/ , then in Command Prompt:

cd C:\ComfyUI
python -m venv .venv
.venv\Scripts\activate
pip install --upgrade pip
pip install -r "C:\Users\robert\AppData\Local\Programs\ComfyUI\resources\ComfyUI\requirements.txt"
pip install torch torchvision torchaudio --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu124

Let me know if disconnecting the VPN helps!

@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Feb 19, 2026):

Thanks for your patience Robert. A few issues with the manual setup:

1. Microsoft Store Python may cause problems
Microsoft Store Python has been reported to cause issues with ComfyUI. I recommend uninstalling it and installing Python 3.12 from python.org instead (use the "Windows installer (64-bit)" option and check "Add Python to PATH" during install).

2. Correct requirements.txt location
My apologies for the confusion! The correct path is AppData\Local\Programs, not Roaming:

C:\Users\robert\AppData\Local\Programs\ComfyUI\resources\ComfyUI\requirements.txt

3. Let's redo the manual setup correctly:
First, uninstall Microsoft Store Python, then install from python.org. Then:

cd C:\ComfyUI
rmdir /s /q .venv
python -m venv .venv
.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pip install --upgrade pip
.venv\Scripts\pip.exe install -r "C:\Users\robert\AppData\Local\Programs\ComfyUI\resources\ComfyUI\requirements.txt"
.venv\Scripts\pip.exe install torch torchvision torchaudio --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu124

Important question: What NVIDIA GPU do you have, and what driver version? The original error (3221225477) often points to driver issues, and since the VPN wasn't the cause, we should verify your GPU drivers are truly up to date.

Didn’t do anything different. It must be my graphics card.

GPU is Radeon RX 6900 XT (AS-Rock) – GDDR6

I bet its too old…

Version – see screencapture of Speccy printout

Thanks,

Robert

Subject: Re: [Comfy-Org/desktop] [Bug]: ComfyUI will not start (new install) (Issue #1611)

Thanks for your patience Robert. A few issues with the manual setup:

  1. Microsoft Store Python may cause problems
Microsoft Store Python has been reported to cause issues with ComfyUI https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1504 . I recommend uninstalling it and installing Python 3.12 from python.org https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-3129/ instead (use the "Windows installer (64-bit)" option and check "Add Python to PATH" during install).

  2. Correct requirements.txt location
My apologies for the confusion! The correct path is https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1346 AppData\Local\Programs, not Roaming:

C:\Users\robert\AppData\Local\Programs\ComfyUI\resources\ComfyUI\requirements.txt

  1. Let's redo the manual setup correctly:
First, uninstall Microsoft Store Python, then install from python.org. Then:

cd C:\ComfyUI
rmdir /s /q .venv
python -m venv .venv
.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pip install --upgrade pip
.venv\Scripts\pip.exe install -r "C:\Users\robert\AppData\Local\Programs\ComfyUI\resources\ComfyUI\requirements.txt"
.venv\Scripts\pip.exe install torch torchvision torchaudio --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu124

Important question: What NVIDIA GPU do you have, and what driver version? The original error (3221225477) often points to driver issues, and since the VPN wasn't the cause, we should verify your GPU drivers are truly up to date.

@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Feb 19, 2026):

This is the key information we needed! You have an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, not an NVIDIA GPU. This completely changes the troubleshooting approach.

Your GPU is not too old—it's a capable card. The problem is that:

  1. I gave you the wrong PyTorch install command. The cu124 URL is for NVIDIA CUDA GPUs. AMD GPUs need ROCm-based PyTorch instead.

  2. ComfyUI Desktop does support AMD GPUs on Windows, but AMD support is less mature than NVIDIA and the automatic installation needs to detect your GPU correctly to install the right packages.

Let's try a fresh automatic install:

  1. Delete your C:\ComfyUI folder completely (including the .venv we manually created with the wrong packages)
  2. Delete %APPDATA%\ComfyUI
  3. Reinstall ComfyUI Desktop fresh and let it auto-detect your AMD GPU

The installer should automatically detect your RX 6900 XT and install ROCm + AMD-compatible PyTorch. Watch the installation—it should show it's installing AMD/ROCm packages, not CUDA.

If that still fails, let me know what messages you see during installation. Your RX 6900 XT should work—we just need the correct AMD-specific packages installed.

I appreciate everything you are doing, but this is where we started. It did detect that it was AMD and installed with no error message that I can see as the readout is only about 10% transparent behind the black install dialog box.

I have deleted everything except the python folder in programs

Thanks,

Robert

This is the key information we needed! You have an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, not an NVIDIA GPU. This completely changes the troubleshooting approach.

Your GPU is not too old—it's a capable card. The problem is that:

  1. I gave you the wrong PyTorch install command. The cu124 URL is for NVIDIA CUDA GPUs. AMD GPUs need ROCm-based PyTorch https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/blob/b5ad2ed13e0fc2db339110ed1ef6576562d6eb2a/assets/requirements/amd_requirements.txt instead.
  2. ComfyUI Desktop does support AMD GPUs on Windows, but AMD support is less mature than NVIDIA https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1559 and the automatic installation needs to detect your GPU correctly to install the right packages.

@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Feb 20, 2026):

I understand the frustration, Robert. We've been going in circles and I apologize for that.

Given that:

  • The installer detected AMD and completed without visible errors
  • Python.exe is still missing from .venv
  • You have an RX 6900 XT which should be supported

This looks like a genuine bug where the installation process is failing silently during the Python/ROCm setup phase for AMD GPUs. AMD support is known to have stability issues that are still being worked on.

To help the maintainers diagnose this:
Could you share the fresh main.log file from %APPDATA%\ComfyUI\Logs\? This log should show exactly what happened during installation—specifically whether ROCm and the AMD Python packages were downloaded and installed, or if something failed silently.

Also, after this latest install attempt, can you confirm:

  1. Does C:\ComfyUI\.venv\Scripts\ folder exist?
  2. If so, what files are in it? (Even if python.exe is missing, other files might give clues)

This information will help identify where the AMD installation is breaking. At this point, I believe this needs attention from the ComfyUI Desktop maintainers since the standard troubleshooting hasn't resolved the issue.

This is what I have just done.

  1. Installed ComfyUI Setup 0.85 – x64.exe
  2. Installed to C:\ComfyUI (default) when installation dialog box appears.
  3. When completed dialog box says (with checkbox) Run ComfyUI. Selected Finish.
  4. ComfyUI BLACK dialog box appears (this is the problem with reading any error messages as text is hardly visible)
  5. Select Get Started
  6. AMD is selected automatically, clicked Next button
  7. C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI folder is default. Do not change. Clicked Next
  8. Left Automatic Updated and Usage Metrics selected, clicked Install
  9. Installing ComfyUI (setting up Python Environment) visible. Text is undiscernible.
  10. Result “Unable to start ComfyUI Desktop.
  11. Then new small dialog box appears “Update Available”, selected install now and relaunch
  12. Comfy box shows restarting
  13. See “Unable to start ComfyUI Desktop”. Troubleshooting is highlighted
  14. Press Troubleshooting. All boxes are checked except “Reinstall ComfyUI” and “uv cache”
  15. Ran “Clear Cache”
  16. Terminal opens and runs
  17. Pressed Console logs and installed latest Powershell as suggested through cmd
  18. Winget install - -id Microsoft.Powershell - -source winget
  19. Back at ComfyUI dialog. Reinstall and uc cache not checked.
  20. Pressed Continue, red error box appears top right corner “ERROR – Unable to continue – errors remain”
  21. Folder appearing are as follows (same as screenshots)

a. C:\ComfyUI
b. C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI – this contains the .venv folder.
c. C:\Users\robert\AppData\Roaming\ComfyUI.

ComfyUI does not run

Thanks,

Robert

Subject: Re: [Comfy-Org/desktop] [Bug]: ComfyUI will not start (new install) (Issue #1611)

AMD support is known to have stability issues https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1605 that are still being worked on.

To help the maintainers diagnose this:
Could you share the fresh main.log file from %APPDATA%\ComfyUI\Logs? This log should show exactly what happened during installation—specifically whether ROCm and the AMD Python packages were downloaded and installed, or if something failed silently.

Also, after this latest install attempt, can you confirm:

  1. Does C:\ComfyUI.venv\Scripts\ folder exist?
  2. If so, what files are in it? (Even if python.exe is missing, other files might give clues)

This information will help identify where the AMD installation is breaking. At this point, I believe this needs attention from the ComfyUI Desktop maintainers since the standard troubleshooting hasn't resolved the issue.

@dosubot[bot] commented on GitHub (Feb 20, 2026):

Thank you for the detailed step-by-step, Robert. This confirms the installation appears to proceed normally but the Python environment is failing to set up properly.

Important clarification: You mentioned the .venv folder is in C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI (step 7 was your user data path). Can you please check:

  1. Does C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI\.venv\Scripts\python.exe exist?
  2. Can you share the main.log file from C:\Users\robert\AppData\Roaming\ComfyUI\Logs\?

The log file is critical—it will show exactly where the installation is failing (Python download, ROCm packages, PyTorch, etc.).

Side note about the black dialog box: The poor text visibility is a known UI issue. You might be able to view the installation output in the log file instead.

If you can attach the main.log file to this issue, it will help the maintainers see exactly what's happening during the AMD/ROCm installation phase. This does appear to be a bug specific to AMD GPU setup that needs developer attention.

Subject: Re: [Comfy-Org/desktop] [Bug]: ComfyUI will not start (new install) (Issue #1611)

  1. Does C:\Users\robert\Documents\ComfyUI.venv\Scripts\python.exe exist?
  2. Can you share the main.log file from C:\Users\robert\AppData\Roaming\ComfyUI\Logs?

The log file is critical—it will show exactly where the installation is failing (Python download, ROCm packages, PyTorch, etc.).

Side note about the black dialog box: The poor text visibility is a known UI issue. You might be able to view the installation output in the log file instead.

If you can attach the main.log file to this issue, it will help the maintainers see exactly what's happening during the AMD/ROCm installation phase. This does appear to be a bug specific to AMD GPU setup that needs developer attention.

Could you please attach the main.log file from: C:\Users\robert\AppData\Roaming\ComfyUI\Logs\main.log This file will contain the detailed installation output showing where the Python environment setup failed. Without it, we can't determine if this is: * A network issue downloading Python * An AMD/ROCm-specific installation bug * A permissions or path issue Once you share the log, the maintainers will have the information needed to investigate this AMD installation failure. My apologies Robert—I don't have access to view attachments in email replies. The log file you attached needs to be uploaded directly to the GitHub issue for me and the maintainers to see it.

Could you please:

  1. Go to the GitHub issue page at https://github.com/Comfy-Org/desktop/issues/1611

The validation passes cleanly (all components including pythonPackages, venv, vcRedist report OK), so the installation itself is intact — the crash is happening at server startup, right after the log is cut off at [info] S. Exit code 322122547 (0x13333333) with signal: null on Windows is not a standard NTSTATUS code, which suggests the Python process is either being terminated by a GPU/CUDA driver fault (e.g., an access violation caught and re-coded by the runtime) or crashing before it can emit a Python-level traceback. A likely culprit is a CUDA initialization failure or incompatible driver that only surfaces when PyTorch actually tries to enumerate GPU devices at startup — the --dry-run pip validation won't catch this. Checking for a comfyui.log or stderr output from the Python child process (as opposed to the Electron main log) would confirm whether a CUDA/GPU error is being emitted before the process dies.

I had the same problem, and I found a solution that worked for me. Solution Up Front: try making sure all monitors are connected to the highest end GPU you have installed. Especially since many CPU have integrated GPUs now that may be causing conflicts.

I have 3GPUS, an integrated one with my AMD CPU 9900X, and older AMD RX590 and and AMD RX7600XT. I didn't have any issues with all 3 active when i first set it up, I had all monitors connects to the RX7600XT. I had changed one monitor to go into the RX590 and the issue presented.

I'm guessing since it was more active it probably busted one of the GPU checks in the main.py. If i disable that card in device manager. I can start ComfyUI no problem. After i can re-enable and no issues running ComfyUI. I checked and switched that monitor from the RX590 to the integrated HDMI port on my motherboard and same behavior. I disabled the integrated and ComfyUI worked again. My guess the checks aren't robust enough to manage that some monitors may be connected to other GPUs even if you want to use them for graphics and use the higher end one for AI model use etc.

Try making sure all monitors are connected to the highest end GPU to resolve this error. Hope that helps someone and hopefully a developer sees this and addresses this issue to allow other GPUs to manage other graphics tasks while the compatible GPU is used for AI models.

Same issue here. AMD gfx card and intel iGPU connected to 2 monitors.
During install of Comfy Desktop it detects the AMD card, in the "new instance" dialog it also says "Detected GPU: AMD" correctly.
Running the "create new instance" and I get errors regarding cuda. Disconnecting the 2nd monitor doesn't resolve it, and TBH I don't want to go the whole hog of uninstalling the intel gfx driver!
